Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Jumping?

At our 18m appointment, the doctor asked if LO jumped... Is this realistic? I've never shown her how to jump and she's never tried. I didn't know/think this was considered a milestone even. Any insight?

Re: Jumping?

  • DS jumps all over the place and I didn't even show him how- maybe influence from others at DC. His 18 month appointment is next week, I'm curious to see if they ask me that as well.

  • LO is 14 months and as he does try to "jump," his feet never leave the ground....so definitely won't meet that at 15 months.

  • It was on our development questionnaire at 18 months and DS2 is a jumping maniac.  I don't think we ever showed him how but one day he started jumping and now he loves to.
  • I take DD to a toddler gym twice a week and it seems to be about half the kids at 18 months who are getting their feet off the ground when they jump. DD is 19m and still working on it.

  • I have seen it on our checklist but he wasn't doing it at 18 months and still isn't at 20 months. He tries to jump and says the word jump but can't get both feet off the ground unless he's on the couch or a bed. It's cute when he tries, though!

  • DD started gymnastics at 18mo and couldn't get the coordination to jump independently on the tumble track or trampoline. I would say it was closer to 24 mo before she really got it and was able to get both feet off the ground at the same time. DS on the other hand is jumping up and down in his crib and has been for about a month. There's no rhyme or reason to the development. I didn't do anything different with one kid than I did the other. It just is what it is.

  • Our doctor didn't ask but I know that some doctors do. It's also a skill we worked on with children when I worked in Early Childhood Education.

We practice but he still doesn't quite have it down. He goes through the motions but has yet to leave the ground.

  • I didn't know it was a milestone but DS is 17.5 months and definitely tries to jump. It's so cute and hilarious to watch. They taught him at daycare. He tries so hard but only one foot gets off the ground!

  • DS jumps. He jumps off the bed. He jumps off the couch. He jumps off of our pub height dining room chairs.
  • DD tries to jump and by tries she bends over and stands up really fast. hahaha.

Doc didn't ask at 15 months.. guess we will see at 18...

It's fun watching her try :)
  • Dd is 21 months. She "jumps" but her feet do not leave the ground. She's only been doing this for relatively short number of months though and I think DH may have shown her. I have not been asked at her appointments about jumping.

  • He does not, but we don't practice it. How does one teach a toddler to jump?

  • weird.  our pedi told me that kids dont develop the ability to jump until 2.  although, DD still TRIES to jump - she thinks she's jumping, but she's really just bopping up and down on her knees.
