Fostering a 2 month old for SIL

Hello,

This is my first time posting on this board.

SO and I recently started fostering SIL's 2 month old and are looking for advice on burping.  I know this should come as a pretty basic task but, this little guy can take upwards of 30 minutes to burp and we are wondering if maybe a little change in technique would help.  While both of us have often been around babies we are quickly realizing it is a whole other story when it comes to caring for them full-time and are hoping to be the best foster parents we can be while he is in our care.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    What have you tried?
Some babies burp if you change position (hold in your arms over your lap and lift up to traditional position).
In traditional position rub back in circle instead of patting.
Hold baby in seated position on lap with chin supported by hand, then pat or rub back. You'll want to look this up before doing it, or have someone show you.
Same as above, but lying along our across lap.
If these don't work, you could also just wait give him a chance to burp for a few minutes after a feeding, take a break and burp him again at 20 min after eating.

  • So far we have tried holding him upright over our shoulder then firmly patting his back combined with rubbing in a circular motion.

These are great suggestions.  I will definitely look up the ones you have mentioned and give them a try.

Thanks so much for the response.

  • My daughter really responding to us holding her in a traditional burp position with me leaning back a touch.  Then using both hands one at a time quickly and firmly rub her back from tail bone to neck, fairly quickly so one hand is always moving up the back.  It basically moves the bubbles up and out.

Also, rubbing in circles then pause, then pat from tail bone up then pause, then rub in circles.

  • Walking while patting her back helps DD. I do a little bounce while I walk to get things going sometimes. Plus she likes it!

  • I also find oval drops can help a lot if they really struggle getting burps up. I do a combo of the sitting on lap, pat/rub on the back, and also over shoulder pat/rub..often his burps come when I transition between the positions.
  • Sometimes I tip DD back on my lap for a second or two and then back up to keep burping and that shifts the bubble. Or sitting her sideways on my lap while I hold her chin and chest in my hand and tip her forward a little bit.

  • The things that have always worked for me when nothing else does is changing positions from over the shoulder to something else and then back again. Plus, rubbing their back in an upward motion. That also helps with hiccups. I put them on the shoulder and use both hands (back to back, not at the same time) to rub from the small of the back to the shoulders.
  • Just an update; we found a combination of these excellent suggestions works wonders and had no issue what so ever this weekend!  Thank you all so much for the quick responses.
