Pregnant after 35

Air Travel....Good Idea?

Ladies,

DH and I would like to take a babymoon to the west coast for one week (we live on the east coast) around 24w pregnant.  So, it would be around a 5 hour flight e/w.   My pregnancy is progressing beautifully and I am in good health.  Despite this, I am very nervous about flying for fear something might happen to our baby (as a result of flying.)  I know pregnant women fly all of the time...who else is planning a babymoon or has taken one already?

Thanks :)

Not a babymoon but SO and I are visiting my parents next month, also a 5+ hour flight away.  Flying is fine til the 36th week, I believe.

Editing to say, you should check with your OBGYN if you are really worried.  I am sure there are some women who are cautioned not to fly due to medical reasons.

  • No baby moon, but I traveled for work, including regularly taking 4 hour flights 2 days in a row, until I was into my eighth month. I had a perfectly healthy baby. BUT you will probably be uncomfortable. I had the most un eventful pregnancy in the history of motherhood, and long flights even with getting up and walking etc made my back hurt. And the baby would be doing her "quit squishing me!" kicks by the time I got off the plane. (I don't know if all babies do this, but mine would put up quite the ruckus if I sat for too long or wore anything that constricted the least bit around my waist. Or even rested my iPad on my belly. It was hilarious.)
  • No "babymoon" but I will be flying during this pregnancy and did during my last as well. At 24 weeks in a "normal" pregnancy it should be fine. Walk around a bit to keep your circulation going, stay hydrated. Last time I flew DC to San Diego around maybe 20 weeks I think? I leave in two weeks for London & Ireland but obviously i am not very far along so that should be no big deal. I have a trip in February planned and another in March which is the one I am nervous about since it is to China.

  • One of my IRL BFF's is a flight attendant and she was allowed to fly with each of her 3 pregnancies til the end of her 6th month (employer policy). After that, she had to work in their hub even though her dr had no problem with her flying for a few more weeks. She did take a few flights on her personal time after that.
She would get the biggest laugh at people's reactions to her belly while pushing the drink cart, since the maternity smock/uniform she had to wear made her look HUGE.

  • I flew while pregnant and everything was fine. I refused to go through the scanners though and asked for the pat down instead.

  • I flew to Amsterdam at 12 weeks so a long flight with DS1. My doc recommended getting up every hour and drink water. I will fly at 26 and 28 weeks this time actually in a few weeks. Not concerned at all.

  • I went to Thailand from Paris at 5 weeks and was fine. Will be going to Texas from Paris at 15 weeks which should be fine and then I'll be going to Colombia from Paris at 25 weeks and that should be fine too. Like everyone says, get up, walk around, drink lots of water. (First class wouldn't be bad too!)

  • I flew throughout my first pregnancy and went to HI in my 6 month.  I was considered high-risk for various reasons and this was fine with my doctor but she did 'ground' me at the start of my 7th month - not for flying safety reasons but because she wanted me to be near if something were to happen.

  • I've flown at 15 weeks, 17 weeks, and 26 weeks during this pregnancy. :)
  • Thanks ladies for your responses.  We decided we are going to stay local for our babymoon (local meaning a 3 hour drive to the beach) and booked an oceanfront suite :)   We are excited to have some time away from work and house projects to enjoy each other...plus we will be celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary too :)  Looking forward to a stress free getaway with my honey!

I hope everyone is doing good :)
