Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleeping at night

My daughter is still waking up every 3 hours to eat. Some nights she will go 6 hours without a feed but this is very unusual. She is almost 12 weeks is this pretty common for babies of this age? Any tips to help baby sleep longer at night,

Re: Sleeping at night

  • It's normal for some babies.  My son is almost 6 months and there are still nights when he will wake up every three hours, usually he only wakes once in the night to eat.  To make it easier on us, I usually go to bed expecting I'll have to get up at some point to feed him.  Also, my husband and I switch off who has to get up so one of us always gets a decent night's rest.

Do you have a bedtime routine?  Does your LO like baths?  My son seems to be more likely to sleep through the night after a bath.  We also have started moving his feeds from once every three hours through the morning and early afternoon to two hours in the evening and it seems to help.  Hang in there.

  • LO is almost 18 weeks. I could have written your post myself! It has to get better eventually. Until then I just try to think that he misses momma and needs to cuddle. We EBF
  • Just curious but when he wakes during the night have you tried just soothing and not automatically feeding? I was feeding until a friend pointed it out... Turned out one of the times he just needed soothing and after a few days of soothing he stopped waking up. With ds it doesn't take very long to know if soothing is all he needs or if hunger is the true cause of the wake up.

  • Normal. I guess I would do that PP said and see if she's waking for food? My DD wakes up sometimes in the night but just plays with her love or cruises around.

Also, I've found that babies sleep habits reflect the parents .I sleep ALOT, always have. I need it to function, and she seems to have inherited that from me.  We're both deep sleepers. My husband, as a baby, didn't sleep much. To this day he only really needs 5-6 hours and will wake up in the middle of the night if he goes to bed too early an wakes up at the drop of a hat (except when she cries, of course;) )

Are either you or your partner a "light" sleeper or don't need that much sleep? She could just not need that much sleep.

  • I have the same issue with my lo. He's almost 5 months sold and for the past almost 2 months, he's been waking up every 1-2 hours to eat. If he wakes up right after I feed him, I rock him but then he wakes up an hour later anyways. I'm happy if he's in bed by 10pm! For the first 2 months he was a dream and slept from 9:30 to 5 but not anymore. :)
