Tell me about your Christmas Stockings

I'm ready to get our little family special stockings (our old ones are old and plain). I want them personalized too. But I have a problem...I am not crafty so I don't want to do the names myself. I'm looking online and all the stockings are so ugly!! Also they only do 8-9 characters and B's given name is 10! Should I use her nickname? And I don't know if mine should say Mama or my first name.

If you celebrate with stockings, where did you get them and do they have your family's names on them? Does yours say mom or your first name?

I'm running out of time here. Thanks in advance.

  • I ordered ours from Pottery Barn and I love them! They all have our first names. They only do 9 letters as well though.

This might be hard to see...but it's the only picture I have of the stockings and I'm not at home right now!  My mom made them for us.  Ours say "Dad" "Mom" and "Sam".  DS's full name is Samuel.  And I hope we didn't jinx ourselves, but she bought all the fabric last year for 1 more stocking for the next baby.

I would put her nickname on the stocking if you can't find somewhere that will do more than 9 letters.  Growing up, my mom made our stockings as well and mine said Allison, when they call me Alli the majority of the time.  But my brother's said Tony when his full name is Anthony.  So it always kind of bugged me that it wasn't consistent.

  • Our stockings are pretty plain, with no names, I don't even know where I got them since it was so long ago.  DS's stocking is from PBK and I love it!  Any future kids will get one from there, too.

  • Ours are from Lands' End.  I think they are beautiful, but not everyone likes needlepoint.  They have a 10 character maximum.

They are pricey, but have deals after Christmas.  My mom bought ours for us as a Christmas gift right before the holiday last year, and she got a very good deal.
  • I made ours from some red corduroy and tartan my Gram brought back from Scotland (which I also turned into a tree skirt). The girls have there names hand-embroidered in. I am no artist, so it looks fairly ridiculous, but I guess that adds to the home-spun charm, right? Each stocking has a little tartan applique on it and decorated with vintage buttons from my other Gram (one is a snowman, one a x-mas tree and one is a reindeer). They are cute, but mostly I was trying to incorporate both of my Grams into our tradition since they are no longer with us.

Land of Nod does names up to 12 letters. Or check around with crafty friends. Many people seem have sewing machines that can do embroidery.

  • DH and I have plain stockings. I wrote our names in gold glitter paint. It's actually not as ugly as it sounds. :) We weren't mom and dad yet when I did it.

I bought one for DD last year and wrote her name too. The style of the stocking does not match ours. I'm trying to decide what to do with it. A part of me thinks our little mismatch is charming. I'm also considering trying my hand at making a cross stitch stocking. Not sure yet.

Oh, and my mom bought a stocking for my dog. It's kind of funny, because it's the biggest and most elaborate one.
  • Here are our stockings. My Gramma made mine 30 years ago and I made the other two. image

  • I won't be any help on where to get stockings, since MIL hand embroidered ours (DS's should be done for this year), but they do have our names on them. And mine and DH's have our first names, not Mom and Dad.

Of course, DH's is from when he was a kid. I also still have mine from when I was a kid, which also has my name on it. It's an internal struggle every year on if I want to use the one that has sentimental value or the one that matches everyone else's. Ha. Usually I just have them both hung up. :)

  • @lindsaydesigner those are so pretty! You should have an etsy shop. Or do you?

@taphathank cute pic, I could see the stockings when I enlarged it. I hope you get your fourth!

jessica swanlake oh the Land of Nod ones are cute! But dang it, the one I really like is not available anymore!

@piphigirl I didn't know Lands End did stockings so thanks. However, DH is anti needlepoint style (yes I give him a say). :)

Yeah, I should make DH fill them both for me. :)

But really, the stockings his mom made are twice the size of the one I had growing up. It is hard to fill them up! And the ones she made aren't identical, but same size and style.

  • Do you have a Lids near you? They are embroidering slip covers for the girls. The guy working there said he had 30 stockings to do. That might help you get around the letter limit.

My FIL made DS's stocking. (And DH's.) Both are cross-stitch.

Here's a picture from last year of DS with his stocking:

  • I have one that my great grandma knitted- it has an H and a penguin on it.

I got Z one at Target that has a penguin. We are getting her name embroidered on it.

DH lost a lot of his stuff in a fire as a kid- so we got him a new stocking the first year we were dating- it's red and has his initials on it.

They are super simple but have stories behind them :)
  • @NeneCakies I don't have an Etsy shop, I just make them for my family. So far I have made six for new additions to the family (spouses of siblings and their kids.) They take a LONG time!  I'm sure no one would want to pay me for my time!
