No longer eating

K got a stomach bug the day before Thanksgiving and is STILL not eating like he used to. He has had a bit of a cold recently as well, but I am starting to wonder if, by giving in to his pickiness due to his stomach bug, I started a trend. He has eaten nothing but bananas, applesauce, fruit pouches, goldfish, and oatmeal for the past 3 weeks and it is getting ridiculous. Meal time is the absolute worst and I put him to bed the other day with maybe 4 bites of steamed carrots in his belly because I didn't want to promote the pickiness by offering alternatives like I had been doing. He slept fine, but I still felt terrible.

Has anyone else had their child suddenly enter an eating funk? (I know a lot of you deal with this daily, and I feel for you! It's rough!) I am just trying to figure out if it could still be due to sickness or if I have created a picky monster by letting him eat this way after his bug.

Does he have lots of mucous from his cold? If so that could be the cause. When my LO has tons of mucous she eats less, is very picky, and will throw up pretty easily. The pedi said all the mucous in her tummy is causing the issue and to just let her eat what she wants and the amount she wants.

She also says they tend to be picky in general at this age. She said as long as they are getting some source of protein not to worry. She says pushing yogurt is usually a good compromise.

  • @Bliz1712 K is the exact same way about the highchair. I have been giving in lately and it has made it worse when I try the chair, and really bad for when we are out and he has to use a highchair so I am trying to not give in, but he is not taking it well.

@aylafsu88 He does still have a lot of mucus. I have been rationalizing the issues as lingering from his cold, and maybe it is, but it just seems ridiculous. He has never been picky like this! He fights the highchair, fights even trying the tiniest bite of anything other than those I mentioned, and even when it is something he likes, he only eats a little bit.

Thank for all the suggestions. It is probably related to his cold and I just need ot be patient.

  • We are in the phase of living off of puffs, applesauce, yogurt and popcorn.

Camden has a sinus infection and is cutting his 2 bottom canines but I have found that Cortlandt went through phases like this at this age too.

I am in the camp of offer what we are having and have him at least try it even if he doesn't finish it. I will fix him what he wants after he tries it and so far it works. Cortlandt has been having "breakfast" for dinner for almost a month now!

Did you try spanking him?  Kidding of course (There was a previous thread about that in case you have no idea what i'm talking about.)

As a picky eater myself, I would offer alternatives but my mom did the same thing and probably encouraged my pickiness.  I don't see picky eating as a huge issue, and really, unless you are a picky eater, you can never fully understand the stress that comes from being forced to eat something.

Anyway, I'm not sure what you do right now will set up bad habits that you can't break later.  I would rather have him eating what he wants than not eating at all.  I'll deal with picky eating issues later when he can reason.  Just my two cents.

I am a very picky eater as well. So is MH. I think knowing how difficult it is when you are a picky eater (like going to a friends house and worrying to the point of anxiety what her mom will be cooking that night) causes us to really not want that for him. And really, the things he has been rejecting are thing he normally loves! Chili (his favorite) was an absolute no go 2 nights ago and spaghetti didn't fly either. He is usually great with meat but absolutely refuses it lately.
