Hitting herself & pulling her own hair when upset

Its freaking me out! If I take something from DD (13 months) and she gets that super frustrated/upset cave baby look, she's been smacking herself in the face & head & sometimes pulls her hair for a second. My instinct is to ignore it, and she seems to stop pretty quickly, but it still worries me. Anyone else been through this? Is your kid now a serial killer??

Re: Hitting herself & pulling her own hair when upset

  • Kids! Mine will hit his head against stuff or scream and throw himself on the floor. The worse are the breath holding spells! He has passed out twice!! I hear and read that the best thing to do is ignore them. I tell him no and that he is not being nice and I sit him in his playpen until he calms down. This usually works

  • I "loved" your post OP, because I like the "and is your kid now a serial killer" part. Made me literally LOL at work. Now, all I can offer as advice is that DD will throw herself onto the floor and occasionally hit herself or me when she gets upset. At first, I would react by telling her No, we do not hit, or don't do that (throwing yourself on the floor) you're going to hurt yourself. Then, I read that it is better to ignore so that they dont learn that even bad behavior gets attention.
  • I think this type of behavior is completely normal.  I asked the pedi about it at his last visit and she said that doing these things is the only way that they can show frustration as they can't verbalize it.  My son will throw his head back multiple times against the back of the carseat when he's mad.  He sometimes will run to a wall and hit his head.  If he is in my arms and gets mad at me for taking him away from something he wants to do, he will pull my hair and hit me. He obviously throws himself on the floor (or oftentimes runs all the way across the room to the couch and will throw himself on that which is actually pretty funny, it's like "I'm going to throw a tantrum but I'm going to take the time to find a soft surface first").  The pedi said it will stop when they are better able to verbalize what they want.

  • DD pulls her hair but, she just does it to get attention and thinks it's super funny. She hasn't done anything like that when she's mad yet.
