Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

foods your feeding

I have a 12 month old and she  is a very picky eater.  What are the foods your feeding your 12 month old?

Mine does not want to eat veggies.  Its stressing me out because I'm afraid she's not getting enough of what she should be.

  • My "What To Expect" book says that we can get all the vitamins we need from fruit. I try not to stress about eating so many veggies anymore. I keep offering but I figure if it's something I won't eat, I'm going to have a hard time getting DD to eat it.

She will eat carrots, green beans, peas, corn and sweet potatoes. I'll give her cantaloupe or peaches for vitamin A. Strawberries or mandarin oranges are good for vitamin C. Blueberries are very nutritious.

The other suggestion I have would be to "spice up" the veggies you're giving her. Try some cinnamon on carrots or roast veggies in olive oil with garlic powder and pepper. Parmesan cheese goes well on veggies too. Good luck!

  • Young children need to see and explore new foods several times before eating them.  Keep offering what you are eating.  It's ok if she only eats fruits, she will get the same nutrients as she would from veggies.  Just offer a wide variety of foods, offer foods repeatedly, eat together, and relax.

  • Frozen veggies work well for us, he might eat the frozen ones over fresh.  Also does LO like salad dressing?  My mom got us to eat veggies by dipping them in the dressing, DS loves the balsamic vinegar one.  He dips pretty much anything in it.

  • JandACoffee - can you tell me more about these cheesy tater balls?  That sounds like something I'd like to try with my LO  :)

  • A veggie that my LO will always eat is asparagus.  It was easy for him to hold and chew on when he was really little and he still loves it.  Also, zuchinni sticks, for the same reason.  All in all, he seems to loves veggies so we might have just lucked out there but those are a couple of his faves.  Right now he's really loving cucumber and green beans.

As for other foods, he just eats what we eat.  He's pretty good at trying whatever he's given but there are a few things he just doesn't like.  We typically avoid those things on a regular basis but try to reintroduce them randomly.
  • DD eats what we're eating. Her favorite veggies are carrots, broccoli, corn on the cob. She loves all fruit. When she doesn't eat well I give her some cheese.

  • My LO is one and while she will eat hand held food, is it bad that I still feed her a lot of stage3 baby food? She always finishes it and doesn't always do very well with regular food. Too, though, my hubby works an obscene amount of hours--it's been this way for 3-4 months and quite honestly I don't cook like I should since he really doesn't eat at home and it's just me eating the meals I cook. So it has been the easy way out for me lately feeding LO like this.

My son is obsessed with dipping things. He is constantly yelling "Dip it! Tchetchup!" Tchetchup is ketchup if you can't understand his version of pigeon English lol. And ketchup for him is ranch, cheese sauce, hummus, fruit dip, and of course, actual ketchup lol.

  • Well, my son is 18 months, but what he eats is similar to 12 months. He eats peanut or almond butter on toast sprinkled with cinnamon, turkey and cheese sandwiches, scrambled eggs (sometimes with ham, cheese, or sausage), pot pies, whole wheat spaghetti with ground turkey, quinoa cakes, chicken, fish nuggets, cheese tortellini with marinara, fried rice with chicken, goldfish crackers. He also eats organic fruit and veggie pouches. I continue to offer him regular fruits and veggies, but the only thing he will eat are sweet peppers and Asian pears. He loves the pouches. So far, it's really the only way to get him to eat many fruits or veggies.

  • Try putting them on your plate?  DD is always more interested in what I'm eating than what she has even when we are eating the exact same thing!  LOL! She'll eat anything if it comes off my plate.
  • OH! Also try frozen veggies!  DD loves peas straight from the freezer!!!  I was shocked but the nutritionist at the hospital I work at said they feed frozen foods to kids with eating issues because it helps them feel where the food is in their mouths.  So apparently lots of other kids out there eat veggies straight from the freezer.  We have tried only peas and carrots but I'm sure you could cut up any cooked vegetable and freeze it.  She'll also eat frozen berries.
