Cribs and chemicals

A mom friend starting talking about how terrible it is to have a crib that isn't solid wood because of chemicals used in veneers and other wood-based materials.  She successfully increased my anxiety.

Thoughts on solid wood cribs vs. cribs with wood components?

  • Solid wood cribs have chemicals too.  What do you think the finish is made of?
Just get the crib you like, be sure to air it out before putting your baby in it.

  • I agree chemicals are everywhere but my philosophy is if I can prevent exposure without breaking my budget then I'm going to do it. I bought a DaVinci crib. They are solid pine and the finish is non toxic lead and phalate free. Do some research on green cribs, most will break the bank and in my mind that's money better spent on college, but there are affordable cribs out there that are slightly better and cost the same as the MDF formaldahide cribs.
  • There's a great article (written by a mom) about how to find cribs and crib mattresses that are made with safer materials, which might help!

  • We have a Naturepedic mattress. It was a splurge but important to me bc they are much closer to the mattress than the crib itself.
