Babies: 6 - 9 Months

feeding solids

Hi Ladies,
Im from the 3-6mon board and the Aug 2013 board and I just want some opinions from some ladies who are going through this or have gone through it. i was wondering how you started introducing solids. I heard that you should do one fruit or veggie at a time for like 10 days or something? I don't know. Pedi isn't much help on specifics. How did you start? what did you start with? How much? How did you progress? Etc. Im also going to post this on the 9-12 mon board and another bumpie posted a similar question so hoping for some help ;)

TIA!

Re: feeding solids

  • Give a new food every 3 days to see if it causes a reaction

We started with oat cereal, apple sauce, pear, chick peas, beans, yams, peas, carrots.. All mashed up

Some ppl think to give fruit last but I don't agree with that.

  • We tried rice cereal a few different times with no interest. Finally got some interest with the banana/apple oatmeal. After 4 days went to avocado and now on sweet potato. Next will be pears.

  • We started around 5.5 mo. We skipped cereal and gave avocado as her first food per our pedi. Then sweet potato, peas, pears, and zucchini. We waited 3 days between just to make sure she had no reactions. She now eats a variety of combinations. I eventually did add oatmeal cereal which she now has for breakfast mixed with fruit.

This is a great website if you want to try to make your own food. Also just for general info on introducing solids as well.
  • In the beginning we gave one new food for 3 days at atime, but that took forever so we stopped that shortly thereafter. It's a good idea to keep in mind what new foods your baby is having at any time, though, so that if your baby DOES have an allergic reaction, you have a good idea of which food caused it. Our guy had an allergic reaction to salmon. I knew it was the salmon because he had already tried everything else at that meal before.

  • My son is 6 months and he started solids about 3 weeks ago. I started with green beans, peas, squash, sweet potatoes, bananas and now onto apples. I found out that he has slightly low iron so I am going to give him a little oatmeal mixed with a fruit in the morning. I give a new food to him for 3-4 days and he is eating about 1.5-2 tablespoons 2x a day. I have read that you should give a food 10 times before determining your LO doesn't like it, not 10 days. My pedi told me that he won't starting eating 3 "meals" a day until closer to 9 months.

  • We started with rice cereal (very short time..maybe two weeks if that) and then went over to whole grain oatmeal (although Gerber has it listed under single grain...for supported sitters - it's the organic one). We started with apples first and then carrots and just went back on forth between fruit and veggie on what we introduced. Mine likes veggies better. I think it might be that when I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes and so for the last 15 weeks-ish I couldn't have much fruit. I would spike on so much stuff then.

  • I've done BLW with all 3 of mine.  I don't worry about allergies.  If there was a reaction we'd backtrack but we are low risk for one so I act like it.  The only food I delay is honey since that's a botulism risk not an allergy risk.

Each baby as they begin to eat gets some of what we're all having for the most part.  For example my 6 month old tonight had tortellini with 2 meatballs, banana, and pumpernickel rye bread.  He's only been eating table food for about 1 1/2-2 weeks.  For breakfast this morning he had scrambled cheesy eggs, raw apple slices, and some waffle.
