Feeding baby with jaundice

My first child (baby girl) was born at 37 weeks due to my having preeclampsia. At her first checkup the doctor told us that her jaundice levels were at 18 and we had to be admitted to the hospital. It's been three days since we were discharged and she has only been eating 5 minutes at a time every two to three hours and she sleeps around 22-23 hours a day. She has many dirty diapers and when I pumped she ate 30mL in 2 minutes. I'm just not sure if I should be worried about her short feedings and long sleeping periods or if I'm just being paranoid.

Re: Feeding baby with jaundice

  • Drinking that amount is normal for her age. It sounds like she's just a very efficient eater and that she's eating often enough to help her jaundice. Just be sure to keep monitoring the whites of her eyes and skin tone.

  • Get 'tanning' too if you can. Get baby naked or just down to diaper and do some time near the windows. Direct sunlight only needs about 5 mins a few times a day indirect is 15 mins a few times a day. So long as baby is eating regularly it'll cycle out soon.
  • My DD b 38w hit 17 or 18 and we did the biliblanket at home - she mostly slept and I would get anxious when she didn't wake up herself after 3hrs. All was good: Her levels went steadily down, her weight up and we stooped the blanket within the week. (She remained jaundiced for over two months.). GL.

  • DD and DS were both Jaundice at birth. DD was on a biliblanket for a week till we got her levels below 10. We have since switched pedis and now with DS his levels were 17.7 at 1 week. He went on a biliblanket for 1 day and his levels dropped to 13. Our new pedi said as long as he is gaining weight and diapers are ok he is not worried. DS also only eats for about 5 minutes at a time and had gained 2 lbs by his 2 weeks apt.
  • My little boy was born at 35 weeks and had jaundice. I was told to make sure he eats at least an ounce every 3 hours and to wake him up for feedings. He is now 2 weeks old and was on the bili blanket for a week and off it for a week and he is doing great! He wakes up pretty much every 3 hours to eat and now eats about 2 ounces per feeding. They told me the most important thing was that they eat enough and are very warm we had to keep the heat turned up to 74 degrees until he was over it
