Night Terror...Nightmare...What?

So our LO is 16 months old and, knock on wood, is a GREAT sleeper. We put her down around 8pm every night and she'll easily sleep till 7:30am next morning.

Randomly the past week or so, on at least two occasions already, she has woken up during the 5am hour literally screaming bloody murder. We rush in there, and give her a paci and she literally stops screaming. She doesn't get up or anything. We stay there patting her back and seeing if she'll go back to sleep. The first time it was so close to daylight that eventually she just 'woke up'. But last night my SO stayed with her for over an hour as she just laid there. But every time my SO would move to leave, the baby would start crying again. Eventually she stood up and fell asleep in her arms until I came in to take over after getting ready for work. I was eventually able to put her back in her crib around 7am and she slept until after 8am.

I've read about Night Terror, Nightmares etc but I just can't figure it out cuz its so long after she's been asleep. They say night terrors usually happen early and nightmares not too much later. The only thing I can think of is that both times she rolled herself into the corner with her facing the wall. She started both episodes by moaning/whimpering just a little big before letting loose.

Anyone else have this happen?

  • This has been happening to DS too!  Like your DD, DS is a fantastic sleeper, but the last few nights he'd wake up around 12 a.m. or 4 or 5 a.m. and scream and scream.  We rush in there and he won't even let us pick him up.  We usually turn his sleep sheep sound machine on and just pat him lightly.  After a while he is still awake but has calmed down and we have been able to leave at that point.  I have no idea what is causing it but I sympathize!

DS goes through phases of this and we just power through it. Since it doesn't happen often and doesn't last long, I just do what he needs to make him happy and go back to sleep. I figure he's scared and needs me so I try to be there for him.

This. But for us it seems to happen when he is teething. It's on and off but then he goes back to normal sleep patterns

  • Our DS does this but about five or six times a night. I think in our case it's teething, but he's always been a horrible sleeper. Some nights, it's 2-3 hrs to get him back to sleep.

  • Both of mine get this sometimes.  Usually happens around 5am for both.  I let it go unless it persists.  Unfortunately with twins it's hard to go in and check on one without waking the other.  This just happened this morning.  Unfortunately for me it wasn't anything more than DS wanting to be awake.  Of course DD woke up too so I had two up before 6.

I was like...thanks son.  I totally wanted to be awake before 6am.  How did you know?!?!!?  lol

  • Our daughter will NOT take a binky when she is having a night terror and that usually always works. She doesn't scream but cries loudly and thrashes around.
