White noise

We use white noise with our LO. We turn it in as a part of our nap and bedtime routine but we have the sleep sheep that turns off after 20 or 40 minutes. We set it to 40 minutes and that gets him passed the 30 minute sleep cycle into a deep sleep. I use phone apps when out and about and turn off the noise once he is asleep (so I can get my phone back).

This last week, he has been waking up all night and once I turn the sleep sheep on he turns over and goes back to sleep. I would rather not wake up everytime the sheep goes off to turn it on.

So my question, do you use white noise all night? Or just to put your LO to sleep? What do you use?

  • We just use it all night if he's waking up frequently. Now that he's in a routine, we only use it to fall asleep. And even then, we're weaning off of that so that he sleeps great when we go other places.

  • We have a white noise machine that we run all night. I also use it for naps

  • We use white noise during naps and at nighttime. We originally used a white noise machine, but she really likes it loud, and the speakers weren't the best on the machine. We now use a CD in a CD player on repeat. The pause when it goes back to the beginning doesn't seem to phase her.

  • We have a white noise machine that runs all night, but we use it only when the neighborhood/house is really noisy. The next door neighbors think they're college students in a band and they play really loud with unsilenced drums. : (  Our general rule of thumb is "If I'd use it for myself, I'll put it on for DD."

  • We use a recording of a hair dryer to get her down. I leave it on for naps (because it masks the sound I'm making), but I turn it off at night once she's down. I do however have a fan in her room to circulate the air, it isn't the quietest thing in the world and I think it helps her stay asleep.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I was a little worried at first that if I left it on all night it would create a "dependency thing". Not sure if I buy into that it or if I believe people just have different preferences naturally.

We are transitioning him into the crib and then soon out of his swaddle so I might try the noise all night to help with those transitions.

  • We use it all night. Louder when she is falling asleep, and on the lowest setting when she falls asleep. We use an app on our old iPhone, it works great.

  • Is my baby the only one immune to white noise?!

I play the crap out of baby got colic and use our white noise giraffe but it doesn't phase him.

  • We use white noise all night via a sound machine I got at Target for about $15-$20. We actually have 2: one in LO's room and one in ours, though we haven't needed ours due to the monitor. We live in the city, so there are often noises outside that would probably wake LO up if the noise machine wasn't on. It's portable, so we'll be taking it with us when we travel over Christmas.

This is what we use. I like that we can hook other devices up to it for different sounds that the machine doesn't have. And the night light is great for MOTN feedings or checkup, not to bright but enough to see what your doing.
  • We use white noise for our big one. He's an epically crappy sleeper, so anything and everything that helps him sleep.

    We use an old iPhone.

  • We just use a box fan. Lo seems to like it. I use it for naps and bedtime. I figure he may not need it for forever so it can be used somewhere else in the house.

  • We play it all night and during naps. If I want him to sleep in the car, I just put my phone in there on the "white noise" app and he goes right to sleep. We have the Homedics sound spa which I like.
@JillyBean - that travel sound spa looks awesome! My only question: do you think it goes pretty loud? He likes it loud...
  • We had the same issue with the sleep sheep. I finally went and got a sound machine at Target like pp mentioned. I turn it up really loud and play it all night. That plus her humidifier seems to have helped with her transition to her crib.

White noise does nothing for my LO. We don't even bother attempting to use it.

  • We use it all night, mostly to mask the other noises of the house.  He doesn't use it for nap time unless he's super fussy.  Then I'll turn on the Baby Got Colic just to calm him and then I turn it off.
