Woe is me, the anti-social coworker

edited December 2013 in Working Moms
Tonight is my company's big holiday party.  It's freaking HUGE.  Everyone is invited - our subsidiaries, everyone's spouses.  They takeover a huge hotel and have open bar and a photobooth and dj blahblahblah.

This is the second year in a row I'm not going, because quite frankly, I hate these things.  So why should I get dressed up and find a babysitter and drag myself and my husband into the city to awkwardly stand around with people I see every.single.day.

Well, the Sr VP that heads up my division just walked up and down all our cube rows to ask us all if we're going.  I have not seen this woman since August, we don't interact with her on even a monthly basis - my manager's boss reports to her - and she was all snide when I said, "no, I am unable to attend tonight." Like it freaking matters if her division is all there - no one's taking attendance.  There will be 2000 people there, no one will notice at all!

So now I feel like an anti-social dunce, like I should leave the baby with DH, get dressed, drive an hour in the city, have my one drink and then drive an hour home.

GROAN.

  • DH's company party is tonight.  He's been pretty down on work lately, so he's debating even going.  His company is no where near as large, so his presence will most likely be missed.  I'd say don't go.  If you don't want to, you shouldn't have to.  It isn't obligatory.  Don't feel bad about your decision not to go. It's none of their business if you make it or not.

so it's open bar and then everyone has to work tomorrow?
Yup.  Which is why they hold it on a Thursday - to subtly "encourage" us not to get sh*tfaced.

Honestly, I'm amazed they still do this.  I don't know a single other company that does anything outside of the office.  Seriously, they spend THOUSANDS on this - I'd rather they cancelled teh party and cut me a check :P

2000 people?  Next time, just say "Yup! I'll be there...".  ;)  She'll never know...

THIS!! haha. I wouldnt feel bad about not going. guarantee it when she is there tonight she wont be looking for you and wont even remember you said you werent going (no offense!)
  • We went to DH's yesterday. It was a waste of a looooong drive. I had almost nothing to eat there and noone to talk to (most of his immediate group came without wives and these computer geeks are not exactly social butterflies :)). And not even alcohol since I'm pregnant. The only fun thing was an opportunity to dress up.

  • Before I became a teacher I worked for a large company. I went to three or four large parties like this. I don't mind huge events but there's usually somewhere else I'd rather be.

Don't beat yourself up over this.  Don't go. You'll be more productive at work tomorrow than many of your party-going colleagues :-)

  • I'm more pissed off that our senior vp was going up and down aisles taking attendance. I mean, if it's mandatory, tell us it's mandatory.  If it's optional, don't give me the third degree when I don't go.

And you're right, next year I'll just lie ;P

  • I totally get not wanting to go. I skipped out on our out of office party - why do I want to pay and go hang out with people I see more than I see my family all week?!

  • Whatever.  If they can't get why you have more important things to do with your life then obviously they don't have much of a life.
  • I get not wanting to go. However I may be in the minority because I do not attend any event that takes place after my work hours. My company used to have a Christmas lunch and I always left when my work hours ended. This year they are having a business-attire party at a hotel on a Saturday so I will not be attending.

  • I get annoyed by these gatherings outside of work hours. If you want me there, then pay me. If you're not paying me, then I'm going to decide how to use my free time and depending on how I feel, I may or may not go. Maybe if I made tons more in my paycheck I would feel more generous about this and go to more functions.
