STMs Bed rails?

James just fell out of bed, again. He does it about once a week. Well, maybe more but once a week while I am still awake. He doesn't cry or anything and he just climbs right back into bed. I feel bad but I know he would freak if I put a traditional bed rail up. I was thinking about the pool noodle under the fitted sheet. Has anyone tried that, does it work? Any other ideas?

Re: STMs Bed rails?

  • Ds1 has fallen out of bed a handful of times but he does the same as James usually just climbs back in or stays asleep and snuggles his rug. ( we hear the thud and go investigate) he never cries. We did the pool noodle when we were at my moms because new bed/new environment and he did ok but his falls are sporadic so I don't know if it's coincidence when he stays in bed or not .

  • If he's getting right back into bed does he really need one? How far off the floor is he?

I've never used the pool noodle, but I've heard it works ok. My other suggestion would be to just put his mattress on the floor until he stops falling out. DS is in a toddler bed with a built in rail, so I don't really have the experience of a bed rail.
His box spring and mattress are on the ground so it is less than 2 feet, I think. It is still a pretty loud thud when he hits the ground. :(

  • I was going to suggest the same as mrssparklebottom. It is half the size of a traditional bed rail. That is what we have on keagans bed since we just took the front rail off his crib., he isn't in a twin bed yet. Fwiw my sd still falls out of bed sometimes and she is 7. I don't think it's typical for kids her age to still be falling out of bed, but it does happen.

  • We used the mesh one for a few months and he would sleep right up against it most nights.  We took it off a couple months later when was climbing in and out of bed a lot more and just kept climbing over it (instead of going around).  He's only fallen out of bed twice.

Haven't tried the pool noodle, but it's a cheap solution, so if it doesn't work, you can always go back out and try a mesh one?

  • We have not had that issue but the pool noodle sounds like a good idea.  Or maybe put some pillows next to his bed to cushion the fall.

  • I used to just go in the middle of the night and pull them back to towards the wall or the middle of the toddler bed. They sleep heavy so it was easy to do. I think the pool noodle sounds like a good idea, and I kind of wish I would have thought of that back when we were having this issue.  Our boys move in their sleep big time.

  • I agree...give the pool noodle a shot.  I've never tried it, but it may work.  Otherwise, I'd just put some pillows or blankets on the floor to soften the fall.

  • We just recently took DS's bedrail down. He's fallen a couple of times, but he usually does the same thing and just crawls back into bed.

  • I'm glad to read how common it is to fall out of bed. I was feeling bad for the guy. But I guess it is just part of being a kid.

  • Let us know how the pool noodle works for you. We moved Kenleigh to a full bed when she was 2 and she did great with the mesh bed rail. We bought a new house right before she turned 3 and didn't want to put the bed rails back on her bed so we tried the pool noodle. It had worked well for a friend's little girl. It was like it was non-existent for Kenleigh. She just moved right over it so it didn't end up working for us. We put the bed rail back on and she's been fine. It doesn't go from top of bed to bottom so it's not too restricting!

  • @hmp1, I remember falling out of the top bunk almost every night as a kiddo. I was 5 at the time and my little brother had the bottom. I never cried and didn't think much of it. My mother finally got me a rail but if I survived the top bunk nightly, I'm sure he isn't too damaged. ;)
