Pre payment on delivery

Some people mentioned they had to pre-pay in advance for their delivery (doctor and hospital) that won't happen until January. I was interested since we already met out deductible for this year - those that pre-paid did it go through insurance or is this just like a down payment to the hospital? TIA!

Re: Pre payment on delivery

  • They will not run it through insurance because it hasn't actually happened yet. We had met our $7k deductible this year and they wouldn't charge any of it to this year. That's why we switched. We did not want to pay a $3k down payment

  • We had to pay something like $252, and while I'm sure they didn't run it thru insurance, I they must base it on what kind of insurance plan you're on, because they knew about what it would be and told me that if I go in Jan (which is a really good bet, my OB even said I may have a Feb baby), it'll be more because I won't have met my deductible.  Of course if I have to have a CS, then that'd be more too.  I think they do it so you can just pay a little at each appointment if you're more comfortable with it.

  • We found out that our prepayment was only for all my prenatal care, but we will owe more for the delivery and stay at the hospital after I have the baby.  Not sure about the deductibles, but my son is due 1/7/2014, and our insurance company is changing January 1.
  • I got a call yesterday, for the very first time, asking me to prepay for the delivery they are planning for December 30th. They said that if LO gets here January first or later, I will owe the entire amount of my deductible on top of the fees I am already paying- even if I pay them in advance.
  • It depends on your insurance and your docs office. We have pre-paid $400 to my doc which is the deductible for the year - however, even if I deliver in January - I won't owe more money because they don't submit it to insurance until I deliver.
  • I had to prepay 550 to my doctor which was my 20% copay for third tri costs which include l&d but docs costs only. I talked to billing if it ends up being less than their projected I get a refund but not til 3 weeks after delivery when the bills are done. I'm going to owe my hospital separately and they will be billing me for my deductible for next year so either way I'll meet it before my doc bills. I took out an FSA for the projected amount of the hospital - my insurance has an estimator that will show you the average cost for that hospital or provider and the cost to you I just hope it doesn't end up being more!
