Question for bumpies with teacher SO

Is anyone else's SO a teacher? Are they planning to take leave when LO arrives? DH is only planning to take 3 days or so, even though he has umpteen sick hours. He doesn't seem to understand what he can is allowed to take and complains that sub plans are a pain anyway. Am I unrealistic to want him to take a week or two? Are male teachers not allowed paternity leave? I realize this is different in each district, City, State but was just curious what other teacher SOs are doing.

I will say that he is super supportive and very helpful when he is home so this is not a complaint about that. :)

I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

Re: Question for bumpies with teacher SO

  • I'm a teacher and so is my husband. Last year a good friend of mine had a baby in March and had to go back to work just for the last two weeks of school. Her husband is also a teacher so he took a little time when the baby was born and then was able to take off the last two weeks so he was with the baby when she went back to work. I had hoped my husband could do that too but believe it or not, he has NO paternity leave at all, not one single paid day.

Fortunately, I am due February 12th so Feb. vacation will hopefully be part of the time he is home, which will not affect pay. Also, his boss is letting him take a week or so of sick days so he won't lose any pay. The district will just think he is sick I guess, but he will have to go back before he needs a doctors note. We are hoping for about 2 weeks total, but that's with the luck of February break on our side, which let's be honest the baby could be 2 weeks late and then no ha ha.

Sub plans do stink, but I have to do them for 3 months so I don't have much sympathy for him on that ha ha.

  • This varies state to state and district to district.  Most new dads I teach with take a week or so.  Generally, if you have the sick/personal days saved you can use them, but there's not official "paternity" leave where I am.  And if your are taking more than a certain # of consecutive days (like 7 or 10) there's a TON of paperwork.

Sub plans suck... but not as much as trying to handle a classroom full of kids after no sleep.  (especially if he teaches with a team).

Good luck to you both on making this decision.

  • My DH is also a teacher, and is only planning on taking a couple of days off. He teaches high school, and his students are brutal to subs, so he feels like it would be chaos for him to take much more off. The district doesn't offer paid paternity leave (only unpaid), so that is out too. I am hoping that since his day ends before 2 p.m. each day (the time he needs to be at school at least), it will feel like I have him around for half days!
  • My DH is an AP. Right now he says he'll take a week but I think it'll really be a couple of days.

  • My DH is a teacher. He is taking about 2 weeks of vacation time. Depending on how things go he may take a week or so unpaid. I have short term disability that will more than cover some unpaid time for him so we'll play it by ear.

  • I would think your husband would qualify FMLA, and use up his sick leave to make the time be paid. This is what teachers of both sexes do at my work.

Sub plans suck, but I think it's easier if you have a long term sub than just a few days.

  • My hubby is a teacher and he is planning on using 3 weeks of sick/vacation/personal time. They are allowed up to 6 weeks.
  • I am a teacher, DH isn't but a friend whose wife is also having a baby is planning on using 2 weeks of sick leave when the baby comes

  • We are both teachers. DH is taking two weeks off using sick time. He also will have a week off for February break. So total he will have three weeks off.

  • Both DH and I are teachers. He is about like your DH only wanting to take a couple of days off work. He did it with DS and we were fine. He cried when he had to leave us to go to work. I just know how he is...he would bother me more at home worrying about his class! Ha! I had no problem with it. I was nursing DS so at night I would always get up and thank goodness DS was a good sleeper. DH was able to get up early for work and I slept in with DS. Now if things are different/more difficult with LO I might come down on him harder about taking off work.

  • I would imagine the best plan of action, esp. if he's unsure of what he is entitled to, would be to call HR and get some answers
Then, the two of you can talk over your options.

Hub is a teacher (so am I) in Canada. He gets 5 days when the baby is born and then sometime during the first year he can take 5 weeks off parental leave. We have talked about it lots but cannot decide when the best time would be... before summer starts, beginning of the next school year?? I feel very appreciative.
