Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old and nap schedule

My DS is going to be 4 months right before Christmas and I am now trying to get him on a consistent napping routine and schedule. I am also just now starting sleep training at night and both seem to be going well *knock on wood* I know babies will change once you think you've finally got it down :) I am just curious with other mommies out there how many naps their LO's are taking and for how long. So far DS is on nap #3 @ 2:00. He will sleep in his crib for about 25-35 mins at most. I'm also trying to train him to take naps in his crib. He has slept at night in his crib since 6 weeks old. I'm not sure if he'll need another one around 4ish? He goes down to bed between 7:30 - 8:00 at night. I want to make sure he will still be able to sleep at night, but don't want him over tired from the day. Any suggestions and help is much appreciated! :)

My LO is five months old. She takes 3-4 naps a day depending on how long they are. Usually they're only 30-40 minutes. She takes a nap about every 2-2.5 hours. That's about as scheduled as it gets.

My DS wasn't on a real 'schedule' until he dropped to one nap around 10 months (which is early) and took a nap at 1:00 every day.

Eta: I'd say your lo definitely needs one more nap before bedtime. My DD goes to bed around 7:30 and she can't stay up over three hours max.

  • My LO is 6 months old and averages 4-5 naps a day and stays up 1.5-2 hours at a time. Most last anywhere from 30-45 minutes. Around 4 months he used to take a 2 hour nap in the morning everyday but when he turned 5 months it stopped. The past few days though he has been sleeping more like 1 to 1.5 hours in the morning and short naps the rest of the day. He is also teething so his sleep and eating have been varying every day. Short naps is a very common thing on this board. I definitely agree with getting your LO in the crib for naps. Constancy is key. If he sleeps in his crib all night, then have him sleep there for naps too. My son goes to bed between 7:30-8 every night and he typically takes a short nap around 5:30-6. Even with napping that close to bedtime he still sleeps the whole night.
  • Follow sleepy cues and put him to sleep when he's ready for sleep. Short naps are notorious at his age. It didn't get better for me until closer to 6m so you may have several naps a day.

  • My son is almost 4 months and goes to bed at 6:30pm and will sleep till 5am-6am. He will then eat and go back down a half hour after eating and sleep till 8:30-9. After that he will nap about 11, 2, and then the last one about 4 with each nap lasting about an hour. Then he's ready for bed like clockwork at 6:30 pm.

We lucked out. He's been an amazing sleeper since the beginning. He is totally schedule oriented with his nap schedule being the same day after day.

He responded so well to the swaddler. Now I'm trying to train him out of it since he's starting to show signs of rolling over in the near future.

He's funny though. He'll sleep 12 hours in his crib but he adamantly refuses to nap it in. He still naps in the rock n play. So we shall see. I'm trying to train him out of it but I'm going to follow his lead as much as I can.

  • Thanks so much for all your replies and help! Day #2 has commenced and so far DS is doing great on the schedule! He is going to sleep in his crib for naps and isn't fussing much. I think the biggest thing I needed to learn was putting him down for the nap when I could tell he was juuuust starting to get sleepy. He still wakes up 1-2 times a night, which we are also slowly trying to sleep train him. He is gaining weight well so I am not worried about trying to feed him every time he wakes up. Thanks so much!

  • My LO is going to be 4 months on the 23rd.  I try to have her take two naps a day at least, but wont let her nap more than three hours. I follow her sleepy cues and try to get her down before she gets overtired, and that seems to work well for us.
