Did you BF a boy?

My BFF sent me an article yesterday on baby sleep (she has a 5 month old DS), and it mentions that the poorest sleepers in this study tended to be breastfed boys. DD wasn't a fantastic sleeper, but DS has definitely been worse (still BFs once a night). Does that seem true to anyone else?

It makes me feel a little better about things with DS...maybe it isn't anything that I'm doing wrong...

Here is the link (though the article is mostly about CIO): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9778405/Want-a-good-nights-sleep-Let-the-baby-cry-say-psychologists.html

Re: Did you BF a boy?

  • Huh.  I have two of the crappiest sleeping bf boys ever.

    So, maybe?

  • He's not as bad as some of the other bad sleepers seem to be, but I wouldn't say he's a great sleeper. And as we slowly wean, his sleep gets more consistent.

  • i have nothing to compare it to, but DS has never been a great sleeper. we are still breastfeeding. he's always been hard to settle, resistant to naps, takes short naps, and never seems to want to sleep more than about 8 hours a night. he's slept all the way through the night maybe like a dozen times. we've tried various things but we are not willing to do CIO.

now please excuse me while i take a brief nap at my desk. @_@
  • DS was breastfed, he didn't STTN until 7 months but since then we haven't had any issues.

  • My son was breastfed and is generally a good sleeper. He has slept 10-11 hours straight since about 6 months.

  • I have the exact opposite - a combo fed and then EFF girl who is an amazing sleeper.

I think it's more about the individual than how he or she is fed.
  • I have a boy who is a boon addict and didn't sttn consistently until 14 months. I have no idea how he's going to self wean. He still nurses at 5:30ish.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I bf DS until 1 year.  Around 9 months he started sleeping through the night.  Prior to that it was 1x a night for 2 months, and 2x a night when we changed him to his crib in Dec 2012.  Considering that some babier are 5x a night for a while.  I think DS would be an outlier in this study.

Stupid bump ate my reply...so let's try again...

I do think it definitely depends on the individual. They didn't claim all BF'd babies were bad sleepers, just that the bad sleepers tended to be boys and tended to be BF'ed. I was curious if A12's experience matched the study findings.

And I did think FF babies tended to sleep a little longer since formula takes longer to digest, but maybe I'm wrong on that.

Anyway, my takeaway from it was to be glad that I'm not alone...that many babies in DS's category (gender/feeding) had similar sleep issues.

  • DS1 was FF'ed and didn't STTN until he was 15 months. So, no.

  • My FF girl is a terrible sleeper.
  • My DS BF until he was 14 months old and he first slept through the night at 7 weeks old. He has always been a great sleeper! I think it just depends on the individual.

  • I have a BF boy who sleeps great!  We did CIO though at 6 months and then again at 1 year to cut out the final MOTN feeding.

  • DS was a BF boy & he has always been an AMAZING sleeper.  STTN between 8-9 weeks old & never looked back.  Slept 12 hrs straight from 5 months on.  He still slept 17-18 hours a day until like 18 months.

  • Thanks for responding, everyone!

I knew it would vary from baby to baby, I was just curious if our experience matched the tendency in their study. :)
