Swaddle weaning

Anyone else in the middle of weaning from the swaddle?? How's it going? I've been doing 2 arms out/swaddle torso for about a week...had a few very rough nights (up 7 times)...hoping I'm over the hump. She used to wake 2 times at night and now it's a couple times in the beginning of the night (between 7-11) and then usually a 4 hour stretch. Just seeing if anyone has a similar experience? She's 12.5 weeks and started rolling tummy to back a couple weeks ago...and my pediatrician said the newest recommendation is to wean at 2 months (just in case you're wondering why I'm weaning).

Re: Swaddle weaning

  • Don't worry!! My friend is still swaddling at 7 months and her daughter started walking, lol! AND she's a pediatric nurse!

I should have asked my pediatrician "who" is recommending weaning at 2 months. I assumed the academy of pediatrics but I'm not sure.

    .

This makes me feel so much better! We were doing 1 arm out for like 2 weeks til she discovered her arms ( sort of) and then she started smacking herself in the face non stop so we are back to full swaddle for now.

  • The first night my DD slept perfect, we went cold turkey, just for a trial. Night 2 wasn't so great..night 3 we left 1 arm out and it was the worst night-so I decided I may as well leave both arms bc the night couldn't have gotten any worse, lol.

I wouldn't rush it if you're not ready. I go back to work after the new year and I work the 11p-7am shift. I just want to get rid of the swaddle while I'm on my maternity leave so my husband doesn't have to do it on his own at night because he will have to work in the morning. I know with sleep regressions and teething he'll have plenty of nights he'll be up with her and still have to work the next day. I feel like this is one thing I can sort of control...otherwise I probably would have waited until 4ish months when that startle reflex is supposedly gone. Maybe it will be easier to wean when your LO is older!
  • We weaned from swaddling over Thanksgiving week (when DH and I had off). Now we are working on the whole concept of putting her down while drowsy but not asleep. Some nights she does great with it and other nights (like tonight) she just won't go down without being asleep first. I think tonight it has to do with the fact that she was still napping and woken up when grandma picked her up from the sitter then was trying to sleep this evening. It also doesn't help that I have a horrible class this year and come home from school exhausted each day. By the time it's bed time for LO I don't have the energy to really work at it. The goal is over Christmas break to really hit this hard core.
  • I will swaddle till he is to big for the blankets we have.

So maybe another month or so. Around 4 months with ducklings 1&2 they weaned themselves

  • My son will be 3 months next Tuesday and I have no interest in not swaddling him at this point. He sleeps so much better swaddled and now that I am back at work I need it. He startles himself constantly if not swaddled.

@happybride -- this is my child!! If it's not the startle she rubs her face like she's trying to rub the skin off in her sleep and that wakes her. Ughhh we just started to swaddle her to help her not sleep on me, I can't imagine her not being swaddled.

Us too. She sleeps so soundly with it, I just don't want to change things up. I am attempting nap training, putting her in the crib during the day with out a swaddle. She usually naps in the RNP, so she's more snuggly. We're doing ok on the nap training.... Gets better every time.

  • We did it when DD was still in her newborn napper. I think as she got bigger the sides if her napper kind of felt like it was hugging her, making her more secure. We also tucked a breathable blanket around her to start with. We took the blanket off first then she was just in the napper, and then we moved to the crib.

  • Nope.  We tried with DS at 4 months and it was a major fail (being a preemie his moro reflex hung around forever)...he wasn't weaned until 6 months.   DD is almost 4 months and tonight was the first night she woke up shortly after being put down and seemed somewhat content until she wriggled on top of her pacifier, but I'm hoping to make it through Christmas first.  She is sleeping 9+ hours and I'm not messing with a good thing right now.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I plan on making an initial attempt at going swaddle free this weekend.  With DS1 we stopped swaddling a few days after getting home from the hospital so swaddle weaning is something new this go around.

He rubs his face too! And scratches his ears and head (cradle cap).

Our son naps on us or (if we are lucky) in his swing. I only swaddle at night. He won't let me swaddle him unless he's very tired.

  • I swaddle for naps and bedtime. Is there a reason to wean now? My LO likes it and I've heard of some people still swaddling 7-8 month olds. I guess it's worked out for us that I hadn't thought about it.
  • My LO turned 3 months on 9/3. He's a great night sleeper & we tightly swaddle him in the Velcro halo swaddle sleep sacks. The last few weeks he was getting so strong he could actually pull his hands up to his mouth while the Velcro was still tightly wrapped. We tried one arm out/two arms out. He woke himself up several times. I finally ordered a Merlin Magic Sleepsuit. It made us giggle because he looked like he was in a little snow suit, but it's worked great as a transition for us. He isn't swaddled, but it really muffles his startle reflex and makes him feel secure. He slept 12 glorious hours last night! I happy danced this morning..

  • We still swaddle DD2.  With DD1, she got strong enough to pull her hands up as well, so we got a swaddle strap (Anna and Eve) and it worked great for a while.  We stopped swaddling when she could roll back to tummy and found out that she slept WAY better on her tummy.

  • We're still swaddling and he'll be 4 months on Christmas Eve.  He's not rolling back to belly.  Some mornings when I go to get him his arms are out and sometimes they aren't. Once he's rolling or consistently getting his arms out we'll switch to arms out. Til then I'm enjoying the sleep.

  • We're still swaddling at night and DS is 3 1/2 months.  We never swaddled for naps and he rarely naps for more than 2 hours, and even that is a stretch.  I'm not looking forward to weaning him, but we see no reason to wean him anytime soon.

  • DD is 3 months and I really don't plan on weaning any time soon. Over Christmas break, I will get her from the RNP to the crib again (she was an awesome crib sleeper until a bad cold required her to be elevated). But sleep hasn't been bad in our house and I have no desire to mess with that.
