Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 Month Old Sleep Issues!

We bragged and bragged about our LO.. from 3 weeks old we could put him in his crib awake and he would soothe himself to sleep, and he would only wake up once throughout the night. By 3 months he was sleeping through the night. Than mommy went back to work, and daycare struck! He got a cold, which caused him to not sleep (up 4-6 times a night). From that on, he has not been sleeping through the night, and we need to rock him into a deep sleep before placing him in the crib. If he is not in a deep sleep he wakens as soon as he is laid down. Also the bedtime routine has become so stressful, he begins to moan and whine, as if he is in pain. Could this mean he is over tired?! He usually is a great napper, goes down easily and usually takes two 1-2 hour naps a day. We try tummy drops, baby Tylenol, teething tablets, everything because he sounds like he is hurting... Please help Mommy and Daddy need sleep!!

Re: 5 Month Old Sleep Issues!

  • Same situation here DD got sick after her 1st week at DC and hasn't slept the same since. It's a bummer but not much can be done. I keep hoping it will start to get better but we are now 5 weeks past and still the same. Up every 3 hours around the clock to eat.

  • Thanks All, at least its nice knowing we are all in the same boat!
  • I was about to post a question about this until I saw this post. Boo, looks like I still have a while before getting any sleep.

However, my DD has had a terrible cold lately (from DC) that we haven't been able to shake since she initially got it about 2-2.5 months ago.  It was really bad last night, too.  Like, woke up because she couldn't breathe out her nose, panicked at the bulb that sucks out the boogers (and screamed whenever it went near her face), couldn't nurse because she couldn't breathe and, finally, after sitting in the bathroom with the hot water running in the shower for 20-30 min, she took a bottle. Since there is literally nothing we can give her to relieve her stuffy nose, I just hope that winter goes by fast.  I'm not sure I can keep waking up at 3am for almost an hour to get her back to sleep :(

  • If he's still up 4-6x a night but the cold is gone, I doubt that is the reason for the wakings. Teething produces teeth, so if no teeth are erupting over the next few days, then you could most likely rule that out too. Around the 4month mark, a baby's sleep rhythms completely change and are now more "adult like". This will cause babies that were previously STTN, to suddenly start waking again, and confuse the you know what out of us mommies:) My suggestion is to lay him down awake so that he could learn to fall asleep on his own, so he could do the same in the middle of the night. That way when he wakes from a sleep cycle he won't rely on you to put him back to sleep, he'll just do it on his own. Good luck!
