Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

toddler squinting?

hi all, so dd seems to be squinting a lot lately...but i don't know if it's truly squinting to see something better.  it doesn't exactly look like how you'd squint to see something, but more like she's using the muscles around her eyes, instead of her eyelids, if that makes sense.  i always thought she was just playing around/exercising with those muscles, b/c she doesn't seem to "squint" at anything in particular, and she seems to have great eyesight.  for example she'll pick up the tiniest crumbs on the floor or she'll point at an airplane faraway.  anyone else have a toddler that does this?  or do you think i should call the dr?
thanks in advance.

Re: toddler squinting?

  • If DD was squinting, I would definitely take her for an eye exam. It's too hard to figure them out at this age since communication isn't 100% there!

  • I'd go see an optometrist for sure. But DS did this too for about a week, we were waiting for an appointment to open up at the pediatric optometrist, then he suddenly just stopped.
  • so i called the dr. and one of the nurses said that it's not something i should be too concerned about...that lots of babies do this (some kind of tick?) and that they go away on their own.  she said to give a some time and if i'm still concerned to bring her in.
  • If you're concerned I would take her for an eye exam.  At my DS's 15 month appt they did an eye exam.
