January 2014 Moms

Enlarged Kidney update

Some of you may remember that the baby has had an enlarged kidney this whole time. I know a few of you are experiencing this also. We had our final ultrasound today and it is still enlarged. They'd like it to be 7mm and it is currently about 13mm. He said we'd see a urologist within the first month after birth. Nothing is done in the hospital because newborns get dehydrated easily and an ultrasound then could give the wrong interpretation. Unless the kidney grows a ton and/or the baby has a lot of UTIs, we'll mostly do ultrasounds periodically and follow a "watch and see" pattern. If we did have those situations, we'd look into antibiotics and possibly surgery. I'm curious to hear what the other hydronephrosis moms have been told.

In other news, at 32 weeks LO was estimated at 6.3 pounds. At this ultrasound at 36 weeks, the estimated weight is about 9.5 pounds. I know growth ultrasounds can be off, sometimes by a great deal. There are a variety of reasons that I personally feel the estimate is not too far off from the truth. We will see in 19 days!

Re: Enlarged Kidney update

  • I have no advice for you, @sugarland726, but I am keeping you and baby in my thoughts and prayers that everything is totally fine and it's just the magic of ultrasound inaccuracies.

Oh my goodness! Ditto what @PreDempsey said!

I hate his kidneys are still measuring large. When Davis' kidneys were still enlarged, our dr told us pretty much the same as what you said in the OP. Hope all goes well! Maybe big baby just needs big kidneys?

The left kidney is totally normal sized, which seems a little odd to me.

  • I don't have any advice either but I am thinking about your LO!

  • With Julia, she was put on antibiotics as soon as she was born (all of the pictures in the hospital look like she has on bright pink lipstick!).  They advised us to keep an eye on her urine output.  They wanted at least 8 wet diapers a day before we could leave and she had no problem meeting that requirement.  At about a month old, we were sent to the specialty childrens hospital.  They wanted to do some sort of procedure on her that was radiation of some sort and DH and I opted out because she was doing just fine.  We never had much of an experience with the bad as she came out 100% fine.

  • Hoping the kidney issue honestly resolves itself and maybe this is FTM naivety but maybe since Baby Cow is so big already the normal sized kidney is actually on the small side?  Wait, I guess that doesn't make sense either.  Never mind my babbling.  Yay for a big squishy babe though!

@LuGal623 I do see what you are saying and it does make sense. The doctor never said anything about that so I am assuming medically that isn't the case, but I don't know the reason why. If we had to go to a pediatric urologist I'd be in your neck of the woods at RGH.

  • I do have experience with this situation and basically 98 times out of 100, the situation resolves itself.  Very rarely will they have to do surgery to widen the urethra (most common issue leading to enlarged kidneys).  I know it feels like a big deal because it's a vital organ, but it's a very, very manageable situation (not trying to minimize b/c I'm there too, just trying to share info that I got from a number of doctors).

  • Sending lots of thoughts and prayers to you and the fam. I'm glad the issue seems to be "mild" enough that your Dr's are comfortable just watching and waiting to see what happens.

In other news, does @mrsjenni's DD2 know that baby cow has her BEAT according to growth u/s?! I wonder just how much growing she will do in 19 days (18 now?)... I am FASCINATED. My brother was just over 10lbs and he is one of the coolest people I know. I'm convinced being a big baby is one of the reasons he turned out so awesome. Well you prbly already know this because your DD was a big baby and she is so cool!

Well Baby Cow and Baby IV are actually around the same. I'm a month ahead of MrsJenni and at my 32 week u/s Baby Cow was measuring right at where Baby IV measured this week, so I'd bet they will end up around the same birth weights.

Thanks for all your kind words about the kidney and encouraging stories. I appreciate the support!

  • Don't have any advice for you, but wanted to say lots of good thoughts your way. I hope your LO's kidney issues resolve on their own. Hangin there, only a few weeks to go :D!

  • Aww, hun!  I'm so sorry that you even have to worry about this :(  I hope that the issue resolves itself, but if not, it is able to be taken care of soon after birth.  Poor thing (both you and Cow!)

And holy shit, woman.  What are these babies trying to do to us??

Even though this baby seems to be bigger than my others, I have a feeling she'll fall right in line with them...  9 something at 39w.  If she hits 10lbs by 39w, I'll be (a little) surprised.  We'll see!

    Hang in there mama.
