No cervical checks until 37 weeks now :(

Dr had a family emergency so my appt tomorrow is cancelled and I can't reschedule due to my work schedule. They said it should be ok as long as I'm not having any symptoms. I'm just a little bummed that this was my first cervical check and I know it could mean nothing but I wanted to know if SOMETHING was brewing.
Not sure the point of this post just putting it out into the world.

  • @chuggingwater. Yeah I figured it would have shown zero progression but would have been good to know.

  • I'm not looking forward to cervical checks at all!  I'm a FTM, but have also heard they can be disappointing (you could be dilated for weeks without going into labor) plus my understanding is they are super uncomfortable.  I'm supposed to start getting them next week (along with my GBS test) and I am NOT looking forward to that appointment!

  • I feel your pain. I went in at 34w4d last Monday, and was supposed to start weekly appts at 36w like everybody else. That would mean I'd be seen tomorrow or Friday. My OB was out for a delivery, so I saw somebody else instead. He wrote 2w for a return visit on my sheet, and the receptionist absolutely would not schedule me this week. So, I go back next Wednesday at 36w6d. I know it's NBD, but I feel like I got screwed out of an appt. I'm right there with you. I just want to know, even if that means I'm 1cm and going to sit there for weeks. Plus, I really wanted to talk to my Dr. about my hopes for my birth. I feel like at 37w I'm running out of time.

  • I had a cervical check last week, but I'm sitting here waiting for my appointment today and was told by the nurse that there wouldnt be a cervical check until 38w. I'm confused because I thought they were going to be weekly. I was really hoping to see if there was any progress in the last week. I guess I'll just have to wait!

  • For me, they hurt. My cervix is usually way up there and my OB has small hands. Not the biggest fan of them. At least my OB is nice enough to try and not do one during a contraction- that is WAY worse than the contraction alone!!! (although she "had" to while I was in labor, to see if the contractions were doing something...or something like that)

  • I had to get 2 cervical checks when I went in to L&D for contractions a few weeks ago....they were very very very uncomfortable probably because I was very posterior. I don't want them to do anymore lol! I felt like they were up to their elbows when they did it!
  • I'm not having a cervical check till 40 weeks.. My midwife says they have no point

  • I went the week of thanksgiving, I was 34 weeks, no check and wasn't expecting one. I'm going next week and will have the strep b test done, and will be 37 weeks, so I could see them doing a quick check but really don't care if they don't. I'm holding out for my EDD for work purposes and I'll have both kids with me so I'd be ok without getting a cervical check. Wish me luck, my 19mo old can be a terror, lol!

I wouldn't worry about it. Although its exciting to hear that you are dilated or effaced when you are anxious to get the baby out, they really indicate nothing. With DS I had an appt  the day before he was born and was 1 cm dilated, and he was born less than 18 hours later.

I had my first cervical check at my 36 week appt on monday, and she said that my cervix was "very soft" but not dilated. I was actually bummed at first until I remembered how it went for me last time.

  • I had one yesterday and all looked great (no progress) but I definitely feel like I've been having more contractions since...boo irritable uterus.
  • My 36 wk appointment also got skipped, so I don't go back until next week at 37. I'm bummed, too. I feel like I'm too far along to be skipping a week! But that's probably just the FTM in me talking.

  • I think I am having one on Friday, 35w6d. I am having my GBS test, and I think she'll probably do a quick cervical check as well. I join those of you who understand it means nothing, but it's psychological for me. One more step towards the finish line. If I hear I am tight as a drum I will try not to bum out, but I have to admit if I hear I am 2cm or something I will get excited, even knowing it could stay that way for weeks with  no action.

  • I had my 37 week appointment today and no cervical check....I don't think they do them til 40-ish weeks because they don't really mean anything before then.

  • Your ticker says that you are 36w4d. 37 weeks is not very far, right?
  • @peanutmuse. Yes. I'm actually gonna be 37 weeks 4 days at the next appt though. My mind is too fried to count days and I'm mobile bumping :)

  • I had one yesterday. Been cramping and spotting since. Also having contractions and lost my mp. It was no fun :/ don't rush it

This, I won't have any until I go into labour.  I'd rather it be that way.  With DS my midwife stripped by membranes when I was overdue and that made me want to crawl up the bed.

  • Honestly, cervical checks mean next to nothing. You can be 2cm dilated and stay like that for weeks, or you can not be dilated at all and go into labor a few hours later.

Less hands in the vagina :)

  • You want a cervical check?
Count me out..  I might say okay to one - when I'm ready to push.

  • You can decline cervical checks? I didn't even know this was an option.

  • You want a cervical check?

Whatever floats your boat. Personally, the fewer hands up my vagina, the happier I am.

  • My midwife doesn't do them at all either. After my strep swab she said she would leave my vagina alone now :) yay!!!!
  • None for me!
  • I must be weird or something, because my first cervical check didn't bother me at all. It was no different feeling than a standard exam. The only part that bothered me was when my OB said she could already feel the baby's head at 35w5d!

  • I haven't one yet and I don't think I will get one until 39/40 weeks if I even request it. Well I'm doing group B strep next week so I guess they will do something then.

  • I'm in the camp of: Cervical checks hurt like a bitch. Nope, nope, nope. I had one at 37 weeks with DS, and declined the rest until I was in L&D and had no choice.

I get that there is this need to want to know, but seriously.. I've heard of women being dilated 4cm and nothing happening for weeks. :\
