Do you have any experience with baby eczema?

My poor girl started with a tiny dry spot on each arm, I thought it was the baby wash I was using on her so I only used it every 2-3 days to see if that would help, I've been putting coconut oil on it to see if that would help but it's spreading! I'm not sure if this is eczema or what I should do.. Any advice?

Oatmeal bath maybe?

Unfortunately I don't have any advice, but my baby girl gets this on her cheeks! So I'm going to follow and see what tips u get!!

  • My son (who is 3 now) had a small amount as a baby.  I bought Aveeno Baby Eczema lotion.  It seemed to work well.  He grew out of it pretty quickly.  The pediatrician said that babies of fair skinned moms tend to get it.
  • Following this as well. My baby has this on his legs and forhead. I tried putting Vaseline on him but it always comes back
  • Zoe had it and it was a reaction to her soap. When we switched to just castile soap from California Baby it went away.
  • my baby boy has it on his cheeks Dr. told us to use Cetaphil as a wash and only pat it not to rub too much. For bath he told us to use Dove body wash for sensitive skin. After cetaphil he told us to use Aquaphor and also prescribed Desonide Cream. This routine helps so far but it comes back once I stop it. It does clear it up but still leaves his cheeks with a layer of rough skin that peels off slowly. Hope I helped. ;)

Yes, Aquaphor is great for it as well.
  • My DD who is three now had eczema as a baby. We finally went to a dermatologist because the pedi wasn't helpful. She thought it was from something she was coming in contact with because it was only on backs of legs and arms. Anyway she told me to bath LO every day and use cetaphil cleanser or dove soap for sensative skin. Then when skin still moist from bath to rub cetaphil lotion on her and she also provide prescription that was a compound of aquaphor and another medicine I don't remember. After months of trying things this routine cleared it up. Now she only seems to break out once or twice in the summer when it is warmer.

  • I was lurking and saw this....I just went through the same thing with LO who is 9 weeks. I was told to use Vaseline or aquafor and the dermatologist gave us an ointment to try. They made it worse. I seem it gave it under control now and what worked for us was oatmeal baths, no soap or cetaphil every other day (was told not to bathe every day). And applying Aveeno eczema at every diaper change and really good at night. It was cleared up within 3 days!

  • I have eczema. It was worse when I was a baby and never went away. All I can say is if she is crying with itchiness put something cool on the rash.
  • DS has eczema.  His was seasonal, acerbated by certain materials, like polyester or tight fitting clothes (leaving socks on at night produced a chemical burn like rash once).  Pedi said to only bath every few nights and only use soap if needed.  Don't let them sit in the bath any longer than necessary once soap is used.  We would slather him all over with Aquaphor every single night and every diaper change during a bad breakout.  OTC hydrocortisone was good for really bad patches, but couldn't be used more than 7 days without a break.  Using a cool mist humidifier can also help keep things from drying out.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Cetaphyl is the shit. My sister and husband both get pretty awful (almost bleeding) excema an that clears It right up.
Also, steer clear of scented soaps and fabric softeners. They don't help at all :)
  • I just ordered some aveeno eczema baby cream, aveeno baby oatmeal bath pouches and a whole bunch of the unscented Burt's bees products so I'm hoping it makes a difference.. I'll have to go pick up cetaphyl as a back up. My bf has really bad eczema too so hopefully it clears it up for the both of them.
  • I use aquaphor on dd and it helps. It clears up, but doesn't "cure" her. She will still have flare ups and I just have to manage it. Talk to your pedi about it. Mine told me we can use 1% hydrocortisone cream when her itching is really bad. I've found I haven't needed it though as long as I stay on top of it with aquaphor. I make sure to put it on before going outside because the cold dry weather can irritate it more. (But so can being too hot.)

    We're one and done!
  • DD has eczema and we put Burt's lotion on it. She had a rash on her chest and tummy and the Burt's lotion took it away. On really dry spots we put Aquaphor. It has stopped it from spreading, but hasn't made it go away completely.

  • DS has battle with ezcema on and off since birth (he is now three). When he was a baby (under 1 year), we used Aquafor on the red patches. It helped, but never cleared it up all the way, although it also never seemed to bother him so we didn't worry much. Cetaphil lotion never helped much and Aveeno Eczema actually seemed to irritate it more, in our case.

After a very bad flare up at age 2 and were able to get it under control with Rx Desonide and were able to keep it under control using Eucerin lotion (in the tub). We haven't had any issues with it in over a year. If we notice any redness, one treatment of Desonide clears it up over night. We use the Eucerin after baths.

I would try the Eucerin lotion if your Pedi oks it. It has been a lifesaver for us.

  • Dd2 has it and has since she was a few weeks old. We tried several different things, but in the end have found that just ignoring it works the best. At 2, she now tells us that the lotion feels 'bad' on it, and then she'll scratch and rub on it. If we don't put anything on it, she doesn't seem to ever notice it and it goes away in about the same length of time as it does when we do put something on it.
