** Update on Page 2 **
As I've mentioned before, my sister-in-law is on the list to adopt a child through Los Angeles County. Earlier this week, she was "matched" to a sweet 4-week old boy who has been in the NICU with no name since being born at 33 weeks. He is 6 pounds now, off oxygen and just precious. She has been going every day to feed, change and snuggle with him. This morning, a possible grandmother came forward, and my SIL's social worker has "unmatched" her. This is of course always a possibility, but it's still just a bit heartbreaking. Your thoughts and prayers for my SIL as she deals with this disappointment, and above all for this sweet, sweet baby, that he gets a loving permanent home, name and family soon, are very much appreciated.

I understand that "the system" works a certain way, and that maybe this possible grandmother wasn't able to come forward sooner due to a multitude of circumstances, but I think that's tragic for your SIL that she's been "unmatched" now that this little one is out of the woods, so to speak.
Whatever the outcome, I hope your SIL finds peace with it, and I hope this baby has a loving, caring home.

There are three types of foster parents through the LA County system: Foster-to-adopt (low-risk cases that each get personally handled by a social worker - my SIL is one of those); foster parents (what we think of as the more traditional foster situations) and emergency foster care (people who are paid a salary to take very high risk, short term cases, 24 hours a day. These are instances where the whole history and case hasn't been investigated or documented yet.)
Essentially, because my SIL was approved earlier this week to foster the baby boy from the hospital, the "flag" that is put on all foster-to-adopt parents was removed from her in the system, and she somehow mistakenly got categorized as an emergency foster care home.
She got a call on Saturday that there was a baby girl on her way to her house. Things were a bit crazy over the weekend, with a total lack of information from the County (including people calling her, assuming she was a licensed emergency care provider, saying they were giving her cell phone number to the mom, in case she needed it to check in on the baby.), but she finally started to get some clarity on Monday morning.
The baby that has been placed with her is the birth child of a mom who has had 5 other children removed from her. The other 5 children were removed from her at birth. Two of the placements are over 10 years old (so their case files are closed), and the other three were in the last 3-5 years. They have all been in their forever homes since birth, and have had zero custody or health issues. They are not yet sure if this baby wasn't removed from her at birth A) Because the mom had cleaned herself up enough, or
Baby girl still has to be fully checked by a state-approved pediatrician (but she was "cleared" in the emergency room on Saturday afternoon of all the big red flag medical concerns), which was supposed to happen ASAP, but the doctor they want her to see isn't available until January 2nd.
There is a hearing in 30 days (from Monday) at which point the mother has a chance to appear. She has never appeared at any of her other hearings (or made any attempt - aside from once - to contact or visit any of her children during their early, temporary placements). Terrible, definitely, but also a very "promising" indicator that this is a permanent placement for my SIL.
I am not allowed to share photos, but the baby's name is Quinn. She was out our shower on Sunday, and is incredibly sweet! She has beautiful blue eyes. And, at 6 weeks old, she is sleeping 5 hours at a time through the night! While Quinn never "should" have been placed with my SIL, as her social worker has said, this really seems like a situation where fate has a plan (Maybe one "fate" sign: In a baby name book we have, Quinn is listed as a complementary "sibling name" to Jude, our baby boy's name.).
Super long, I know! But I so appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers throughout this week and wanted to bring you up to speed. I have such high hopes that this sweet girl is a permanent part of our family!
