Nighttime Routine & Bed Time

DD is 9wks and I'm about 6wks from returning to work. Right now we try to put her down between 9-1030pm depending on whether its bath night. We always swaddle and I usually let her comfort nurse herself to bed. She sleeps usually until 4-6am straight.

My cousin whose son is 6wks older goes down promptly at 830pm and sleeps until 6am.

Made me wonder if I should be putting her down earlier or set a better routine before I go back to work. I won't be home until 6pm each night and leaving the house by 645am so id really like to have a few hours with her before bed.

Added at 3am PST: I tried putting her down at 9pm last night so her last nursing was just before 9pm and she just woke up starving. Like literally freaking out on my boob. This is the first time she hasn't slept through until at least 430am in weeks. I'm not gonna lie, getting into bed at 10 instead of 11/1130 felt amazing but I'm thinking she isn't ready to go to bed early. Any tips for helping her with this transition?

  • Our little guy will sometimes nap from 8-10 but then he goes down between 11-12 and sleeps till 3-5 am the feeds and goes back down till 7-8 am. We rarely have early morning activities this part of the year so it works for us but this spring we'll have to try to push it earlier at night
  • Well we usually go to bed between 11 and Midnight. I feed her a bottle then comfort nurse her until she falls asleep. Usually sometime between 12:30 and 1:30 am she usually wakes up between 7 and 8am. Then I feed her and just keep her in bed with me, until she is ready to be up for the day. It works really well for me because I usually can't fall asleep until 3 or 4am. I will be SAHMing it up though. In your case you may want her to go to bed sooner if you don't think she is getting enough hours of sleep, but if she is I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Our "routine" is around 8:30-9, nurse for a half an hour to forty five minutes and then hopefully he's asleep sometime between 10 & 11. Lately he's been sleeping till about 6am, but I'm a SAHM, so I don't really push for an earlier time. Plus, with the older kids, it's hard to give him all the attention he needs at night while they are still up.

  • I think you're totally fine to keep doing what you're doing. Esp since you will be at work and you want those evening hours to spend with her.

  • count yourself lucky it's what you should do... my LO currently has a long stretch of 3 hours, followed by maybe stretches if an hour or two.

    This exactly...
But I'm curious as to how I could push bedtime earlier... I am definitely and defiantly (lol) on my LO's schedule.
