Success after IF

Anyone conceive after first super o & IUI?

This is my third Clomid cycle. Today is 14dpo and I got a bfn. Tomorrow I will test again and if it is still a bfn, I will start my first super o & IUI. My insurance doesn't cover it so we willing be shelling out $3k, which will be a huge strain on our already tight finances. I wish I knew the likelihood that this will work. Does anyone have any success stories or cautionary tales?

Re: Anyone conceive after first super o & IUI?

  • Are you seeing an RE? Or are you seeing an OB? If you are with an RE, you should have had testing to determine if your tube are open, uterus is normal, normal SA, etc. If everything is normal, it's possible that your first IUI will work. There are a few ladies around that have been successful the first time. Good luck!

  • Not to be a spoil sport, but endo, even if removed can make iui or natural conception more difficult. After I did not conceive naturally 6 mo after endo removal, I went straight to IVF, which worked. I was too scared to spend 3k with my body as the Petrie dish. An actual Petrie dish worked quite well- though it was more $$

  • No and yes.

Is super O a stimmed IUI cycle versus just using clomid?

When we were trying for #1 it didn't work for us, but when we were trying for #2 it happened on the first cycle of clomid/stims/TI.  BUT... I didn't have any known issues such as endo. I don't know how much your dx can effect your outcome.

  • Why is it going to be so expensive?  Are you going right to injectables or have you been doing IUI along with the clomid right now?

I did an IUI using just Femara which wasn't successful and then another using Femara and a little bit of Follistim and on that cycle I did get pregnant.  The addition of the Follistim uppsed the price, but not nearly as much as if I had done an all injectable cycle.  Also, I didn't want to risk getting too many follicles and felt I could better keep the numbers done by using the oral meds with just a small dose of the injectables.  My biggest worry other than not getting pregnant with getting pregnant with triplets or more.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • We got pregnant with DS on our first IUI with letrozole, FSH, and trigger. I have PCOS and DH's sperm is decent. Though on the day of the IUI he was super jet lagged and sick and our post-wash count was only 1 million. I consider it kind of a miracle that it even worked.

  • @mcgeeva & @mr&mrswoodtick: super-ovulation is stimulation of the ovaries using a combination of injectable meds @amandaleigh1 I thought my RE said I would be all clear of the endo for at least a year. But thank you for bringing that up. I will double check on that. I certainly don't want to have another laparoscopy. I never thought about IVF as a less invasive alternative. I guess I just always avoided thinking about it since I thought it was about $25k. I just can't fathom spending that. If only I were a wealthy woman. @mcgeeva thank you for your success stories. Yes, all my levels are good and DH SA was okay. I had some endo and a few other things that were removed during a laparoscopy, but RE says all is perfect now. @itsmevkb I am going from 3 cycles of Clomid without the IUI to super ovulation with IUI. The Clomid didn't cost anything worth mentioning. My RE didn't give me any in between options. He's been urging me to do this for several cycles, so I'm just trusting he knows what he is doing. It gets exhausting trying to question him about everything, especially with his nurse as the intermediary. I'm just tired, desperate and just doing what I'm told. After 2 years of trying, sometimes it feels like it may never happen. @Mnerani I hope you will have 2 IUI #1 success stories to tell this month! I don't see letrozole on the list of meds my RE gave me. But your story is encouraging and it looks like you are living an amazing adventure!

  • I will say clomid never worked for me and both cycles I got pregnant I used two different injects and I really Believe it did the trick! One thinned my uterine lining to low which is why they switched to follostem but still was successful. Hang in there. Hopefully this next cycle will do the trick! I'm in the same boat as you iui cost 2500 not including meds or pre-testing due to being out of pocket. I really hope it works out

  • Thank you @mcgeeva. It really gives me hope to hear that injections worked for you twice. Both times, did it work on the first try? I don't know which injection my RE will rx but follistim is on his list of most commonly used.

  • For me yes. Did 13-15 days of stims both times since I respond slowly and have pcos so we didn't want too many mature follies to drop an egg. Without stims my body wouldn't release the egg and finish the process to ovulate. I tried metformin for months and clomid and it did nothing. But every body is different. Two I saw three different docs and shady grove is the only one that did the best monitoring and tests. Good luck! Let us know what happens
