Nurseries and Baby Gear

Baby Furniture

So I was talking to dh about baby furniture today and he hasnt been very receptive to the cost.  I want our baby to have furniture that will convert and last through childhood,  but dh keeps saying that kids will just ruin things and there is no sense in spending money on nursery furniture.  He knows we have to buy a new crib vs a used one and he said that he doesnt want to spend over $300, but he said he wasnt spending money on matching furniture.  (note: we can afford it, he just doesnt want to spend the money).

I want good quality stuff (not that good quality has to equal expensive).  This is the set I really like: Baby Cache Heritage.

What route did you go for nursery furniture?  Did you buy all new or just a new crib and used dressers etc?  Which one of you was more concerned about the cost, your or dh?

Re: Baby Furniture

  • We bought all new furniture - convertible crib, tall 5 drawer dresser and shorter 6 drawer dresser that doubles as changing table. I was the one more concerned about the cost , DH just said to get whatever I like. I reau wanted matching furniture from the same set. All 4 items cost about $1100. I see it as investment and something our baby can use for a long time. If you end up buying convertible crib make sure to buy the rails to convert right away too in case this crib is discontinued in the future.

  • my self made budget goal for the crib was under $200. It is one that covnverts to a queen or full bed (cannot recall which). The mattress, fitted sheets & mattress pad were additional. The dresser & changing table are hand me downs from family. Were both fine with that.

Read reviws on BRU, and Amazon prior & went to Buy Buy Baby, asked what they had in stock at $200 or less. They gave me 3 choices, two of which were in my budget. Both felt sturdy. Picked one which they ended up not having, so got the other (think it was a DaVinchi?) Was able to get 20 '/. off because my "first" choice was not available in store (but they could ship it ... was 2 weeks prior to due date so figured would be better to have it in house). FIL helped Dh put it together & was impressed with ease & sturdyness. Am happy with how we did it because the changing table will only be used for a little while longer & she can do as she pleases to the furnature once she gets into crayons & stickers in the future.

If you really want a matching set though, you could see if there is a local moms group. The one I am part of has a search and find where people can email out items that are foe sale. Have seen full nursery sets on there for a fraction of what would otherwise cost. People usually state that home is pet free & smoke free.

  • I bought all new bedroom sets for both my kids (crib, 5 drawer dresser, and changing table/dresser combo).  My DS has the Sorelle Vicki collection and my DD has the Europa Baby Harvest collection.  Both sets are extremely well made and still in excellent condition.  My DS used his crib until he was 3 and then we converted it to a toddler bed which he used for 1.5 years.  His crib does convert to a full size bed but we that that was too big for him at this stage so we bought him a twin bed which he uses now.  His two dressers still look new.

My DD's furniture also still looks new.  We are not turning her crib into a toddler bed though.  We are going to buy her a new toddler bed and use her crib for our next baby which will be arriving next month :)

I anticipate that they will able to keep their dressers well into their teenage years and possibly longer.

  • At home we have a hand me down PBK crib ( with a new mattress) and a changing pad on top of our old desk. We did splurge on a nice rocker/recliner. At grandma's we have a rocker we found on the curb that I'm making new pillows for, a PBK crib from Craigslist with the mattress we got with the hand me down crib and an antique dresser from craigslist that I refinished. The changing pad is on the dresser. I don't really see any point in spending a lot of money on kid furniture. By the time they're in middle school they're gonna want to redo their room and nothing you picked out now will stay.
