Baby fever *updated*

Well crap. DH has has a nasty man cold and then today Ben is sick! Runny nose, occasional cough, generally irritable and fever that keeps going up even though he has had 2 doses of acetaminophen today. The nurse at my pedi office said to come in if the fever persists for 24 hours. Just curious if there's anything we can do at home to keep it down since it looks like the acetaminophen isn't working. We are at 101.5 right now. Any thoughts? Should I not worry until it gets exceptionally high?

    How old is he?
As I understand it if they are over 6 months you can try children's Motrin/ibuprofen.
    Also a cool bath.
    Hope he gets better soon!

Thank you! He will be 6 months on the 16th so not quite there yet. I may try the cool bath. Thanks again.

  • Cool washcloths, bath, and just try and keep your LO in a onesie and not too bundled up. Also try Vicks on his feet and cover with socks. Good luck.
  • @kelly422 I hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks!

    @jgiraldo1120 thank you!

  • Poor baby Ben! I don't have any additional advice, but I'll be thinking of that cute little chunker.

:) Thanks lady! He's trying to be happy but the funk is getting the best of him. It's been a long day for my little squish.
  • I totally thought you had baby fever and wanted another LO already. Doh!

    Hell-to-the-nah! Lol.
  • At 103 now :-(
  • Ibuprofen is to be used cautiously prior to 6 months but CAN be used and you're almost there. There's nothing magical that will happen in 6 days so if Tylenol doesn't keep it down do try ibuprofen. GL!

  • Aww poor Ben! Grayson's been running fever too but it's because of his shots. I would try the ibuprofen and see if it helps he's almost 6 months and a big boy just be cautious and call the ped if it doesn't go down. GL

His fever came down to 101.8 but I did finally speak with a phone nurse. He said that basically with his symptoms -fever, runny nose, irritable, rash which may or may not be related- that the determining symptom as to whether I should take him to urgent care is if he also has a headache. How do you know if a baby has a headache?!! After his fever dropped a bit he started acting a little happier so I think I may just wait til morning... Ugh. This is hard cuz that's my baby but my gut doesn't tell me this is an emergent situation since his fever started going down a little. Anyone know about the headache thing?
  • No idea how your supposed to know about a headache!! I hope lo feels better soon!!

  • My baby had a fever this weekend. It was at 103 for a while and we could not break his fever for what felt like forever. Anyways I alternated Tylenol and Motrin. He is only a little over 5 months but he weighs 18 pounds so I disregarded the Motrin caution and tried it. It broke his fever but I still took him to urgent care and he ended up having an ear infection. He has been totally better now after eating antibiotics. I hope your lo starts to feel better. I hate when they aren't feeling well...it's heartbreaking.

Oh goodness! Poor guy. Glad he's starting to get better and thanks for the Motrin info.
  • Poor Ben! I hope he feels better soon! We've been in the same situation for over a week now with Grayson. He's been super congested and no amount of sucking boogers out seems to help. The humidifier hasn't done a thing. My poor baby doesn't sleep well now and always wants to be held which sucks because we were trying to get him in his crib. I'll be taking my LO back to the doctor Friday if he isn't any better.

  • Thank you @Subliminalrabbit. We are down to 101.8 so hoping it keeps trending that way. However, he keeps waking up crying and will only sleep on me. It's definitely a pain cry now. Kind of second guessing my decision to not take him in now :/

@ColieAnn31 I sure hope Grayson gets some relief soon. Poor guy. It feels awful to not be able to fix it for them. Stay strong mommy. Hugs!
  • Aww, so sorry you are having such a rough night. Hope Ben feels better.

  • I'm just going to be waiting outside the dr office when they open and walk in. Surely they won't turn us away. He would only sleep (on me or DH) and only for like 20-30 min at a time before he woke up crying. Have been giving Tylenol every 4 hours and his fever is still 102. I got about 2.5 hours of sleep the whole night and honestly I don't know how much he got. Not much. Poor baby is def hurting.

Thank y'all for the support. I'll keep you posted!
  • @funkyphoenix I hope the doc gives you (Ben) good meds! you're doing a great job taking care of him.

  • My LO had symptoms like this a few weeks back and the fever and crying and runny nose were an ear infection and a cold. Her fever would go from 103 to 101 throughout the day and spent about 3 days like that and finally it broke after alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol per her pedi advice. My LOs cold did get complicated because she ended up with RSV so just to be safe just take your LO in. RSV to me was a nightmare:( I send you lots of T &Ps and hope it's nothing. Good luck and I hope he gets better soon.

And we just got over RSV a couple weeks ago. Ugh.

    Thank you!
  • @ wasnotwas yes ma'am! :( we went to 3 different doctors and after hours clinics and everyone's advice was alternate between Motrin and Tylenol for the fever and if it was over 104 to give them a call and head to the ER. I even told one of the Docs that my LO kept crying in pain and I was worried and his answer to me was...give her Tylenol!!!! This is the 3rd time we've changed pediatricians.
  • He has the flu! Dr said it may get worse before getting better. I just wish my baby could catch a break! Please keep him in your T & P's. thanks guys.

The pedi just told me the same thing- the fever could last several days, to do the Tylenol Motrin combo and let them know of he gets over 104 or it looks like it's getting better then gets worse again.

Hopefully in our case the tamiflu works quickly.

O I'm so sorry @jgiraldo1120 that must have been such a helpless feeling!

  • No advice just sending you my thoughts. L got the stomach flu last night and spent the whole night throwing up with a fever :( hate that helpless feeling. I hope the doctor can give you some tips to help!
  • @WasNotWas That thought has occurred to me. It's the silver lining I'm hanging on to- that and maybe transition to daycare will be a breeze.

  • Poor guy! Hope he feels better soon. Babies can spike some crazy high fevers and still be in the normal range. I would always be a mess during teething fevers and the doc said it had to be over 104 to worry them! Hang in there mama!
