Is your toddler clingy or independent?

Daisy is super clingy, all the time. She's always one to be held or have someone by her when she's doing something. I'm wondering I this is just a personality thing or a phase. My oldest was never this clingy. Thoughts?

Re: Is your toddler clingy or independent?

  • Nat is 80% independent and 20% clingy. She gets clingy when tired, certain situations, and with strangers. Most of the time if I put her down in public she will run as fast as her little legs will carry her. She loves exploring!

  • A few months ago I would have said 100% independent, but recently he has become more reserved and shy in certain situations where he used to be more out going. So I would go with 80% independent and 20% clingy. He gets really clingy if he thinks he is going to be left at school or with a friend. He is also more shy in his music class lately.

  • I'm going with 80% independent and 20% clingy (just like some others have said).  At home, Addy wants to do everything for herself- "Addy do" she says to everything.  She can play on her own for a while without needing us to entertain her.  She can be a little clingy when we are in new situations or around people she doesn't know, but she is getting better.  Usually once she warms up to a new situation she is quite confident.

  • With DH she is pretty independent.  With me it is clingy all.the.time.

I'm sure I could elaborate but I'm too tired!

  • With DH, he's very independent unless he's tired. With me I'd say like 70% clingy and 30% independent. He's becoming more and more independent lately though...I'm hoping the extreme clingy phase is over

  • I'd say Ian is a little of both.  He's very good at playing and doing his own thing, but at the same time he wants to know where I am and what I'm doing.  He does not want to be held though!  If we're out in public, like at church and people are talking to him and want to hold him, he's very clingy then and I'm pretty sure would crawl back inside me if he could.

  • My DD is still pretty clingy, but only to me!  It kind of drives me a bit crazy at times.  She wants to be held a LOT and wants to be held by me a lot. If I'm sitting on the couch or on the floor, she'll play independently, but as soon as I try to do something, she wants to be involved in whatever I'm doing.  I can usually make it work unless I'm making dinner or her lunch or something because making a sandwich or dinner with one hand is quite challenging.

I am VERY much looking forward to her being less clingy!!

  • Emily is about half and half. She wants to do things by herself, but wants to do them next to me. She gets really clingy when I am busy cooking or trying to do something that requires full attention.

  • Lucia is very clingy to me. But we've worked a lot on times when she needs to do things independently, and with practice she's gotten a lot better. For example, she used to grab at my legs and cry and whine the entire time I cooked lunch or dinner. Now she might need some reminders and suggestions of what to do with herself, but for the most part she can keep it together while I cook.

  • Mainly independent....loves to take control of the room, after he gets comfortble with his surrounders. He is only clingy right at the beginning I'd say.

  • As a whole I would say he is independent.  I'm a working Mom so I depend on several people to help care for him.  So I guess he's use to be around different people.  We never have problems transitioning to a new care giver (although all of them have only been family, people he's familiarwith).

He is on a Mommy only kick.  Wants me to do everything, not Daddy.  But once he warms up in an environment he doesn't even needs us to be in his line of sight.  It's kinda nice.

  • She is unquestionably more clingy overall. Of course she has her moments of wanting to be independent too, but I would absolutely classify her as clingy. Of course I find this both awful and fantastic at alternating times.
