Is there such a thing as too much sleep?

DS has always been a great sleeper. Usually 7-7 and a 1.5-2 hour nap. I am NOT complaining. But, the last two weeks its been almost a worry. He's been sleeping 7-8:30 or 9 and wanting a 3 hour nap. This adds up to about 16 hours a day. Tonight he "asked" to go to bed at 6. He pulled me into his room, signed sleep and pulled his blanket from in between the bars of his crib.

He woke up at 8:30 and napped from 1-4 when I went in and woke him up because I was afraid letting him sleep longer would push bedtime back. Then wanted bedtime at 6:00. I'm just confused.

He's not sick. Not showing signs of teething. Has not increased food intake which would point to growth spurt. Honestly, if it is a growth spurt this child will be bigger than me shortly. He's 97th percentile both height and weight.

Are there any other ideas? The reason I'm asking is because I was totally unworried until I mentioned how much he was sleeping to a co-worker and she said that that is one of the "signs" she missed. Her son is high functioning autistic. Ease my mind. There are no other signs of this. I'm just wondering what could possibly be going on.

  • Hi there! Have you done anything out of the ordinary? We went on vacation to the west coast and when we got home my son did the same thing you described for 3 days. I also think it could be a growth spurt(even though he is not eating more) If it continues and you are worried call your pediatrician. It's probably nothing or maybe he is feeling under the weather.

  • My LO does this every so often. I guess maybe toddlers are just like adults and sometimes need their 'lazy' days, or are just a bit under the weather (but don't know how to verbalize that to us) and want to sleep it off. DD goes back to her normal schedule (which is almost exactly the same as yours) after a few days. I don't worry about it... in fact, I enjoy it!

  • Okay. Thank you for your responses ladies. I think I knew my co-worker was not right but at the same time I think it was really making me realize that something was wrong.

DS slept from 6-9 so when he woke up this morning I called the pediatrician's office. The receptionist didn't act like I was crazy at all for being concerned about the amount of sleep and said that the Dr. would call me when he was out of his current appointment. I just got off the phone with him.

He said based on recent cases that have presented and what I'm describing he thinks my son has mono. I did not even know toddlers could get mono. Pedi said to treat it like anything else with lots of fluids and rest and to watch for a possible fever.

Hopefully he will be back to himself soon. We will just take it very easy and slow for a while and try to stay away from anyone who has anything else. I don't want him catching something because his resistance is low.

    Thank you again.
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with taking him to get checked and making sure he's not anemic or something. I've definitely never heard this as an autism link, so try not to go there. My 15 mo. old generally wants about 15-16 hrs sleep on the weekends. He sleeps 11-12 hrs at night, then takes two 2 hours naps.
  • I'm glad you got it checked out. But DS goes through days where he sleeps 16 hours as well. The thing is, he is alert and active when he is awake. And if we wake him up, he is not grumpy. It's just that left to his own devices, he'd sleep lots.
  • I'm hoping your LO doesn't have mono and it's just a phase. I called the pedi with DD#1 b/c I was concerned that she was sleeping too much. The nurse chuckled, told me to enjoy it while it lasted, and just monitor her for any signs of sickness.
