If you had horrible morning sickness I have a question for you

Did you take any prescription medication for it? If not, what did you do to help it and how bad was it?

I need to know if I am being a baby. I had pretty bad m/s with # 1 & # 2 but # 3 is a whole different level now. I cannot keep food down very well at all. I have zero appetite and when I finally can force something down, it is not down for long. I try and eat small meals and stay hydrated but it really doesn't do jack. I stay at home with DD & DS and I have got to be more functional than this.

My OB called in a script today for Diclegis but I am a bit apprehensive about taking it because I read online it is new to the market. I was on the phone with my mom earlier and she made me feel like a complete moron for needing anything. She reminded me that she never took anything to get through her m/s and asked "can you not just get over it, I mean try and get past it?". That plan has worked out swell so far..

  • What about Zofran?
This is what I thought I was getting but I didn't realize until after I had paid at the pharmacy that my OB called in this other med instead. I'm calling back first thing in the morning. So odd, neither the nurse at my OB's office or the pharmacy tech even mentioned that this was a different med.
  • I had it pretty bad with the last pregnancy. Puked every day including in the OR during my c-section. I just took zofran and it didn't make the nausea go away but I was able to keep food down.

That's crappy of your mom. Who cares that she didn't have to take anything. She has no idea how bad you are actually feeling.

I stopped taking anything towards the end of the pregnancy because the nausea lessened and I couldn't take the constipation that the zofran caused.

  • I have no experience with m/s or meds but can't you just get over it sounds like shitty advice that I wouldn't dare utter to a nauseas pregnant woman who is also parenting two young kids. Hugs to you.

  • I had HG with DS and was given Zofran. It helped a little but I still had to go to the ER once and was really close a 2nd time. My OB prescribed Phenergan. It worked wonders. The only bad part was its a suppository and it makes you sleepy.

I hope you find something that works for you. I definitely don't think you can just get past it, especially with 2 LOs.

  • Thanks everyone. Hopefully my OB will let me switch to Zofran when I call. I am sure this other med is fine, but I know so many more people who have taken Zofran and I'd rather just take that and be done with it. I should have confirmed that that was what she called in for me, totally my fault for not double checking. I actually wasn't even aware this other med existed.

Morning sickness is a real bitch when it is severe. I can deal with puking but I'm starting to worry that I'm really not getting any nutrients. Plus my poor kids were in tears hearing me throw up this afternoon. Ick.
  • I'm love titing your replies but not the fact that you guys all had severe m/s. That I do not love tit. Sorry. :(
  • I hope you get some relief @SGC29!

  • I took zofran with DD. It gave me severe constipation though, and I had to stop taking it. I'm really sorry that you're sick. Morning sickness is the pits.
  • Sorry you're not feeling well! Morning sickness is awful. I had it from about week 6 until 12-13 weeks and it was horrendous. They ended up giving me zofran bc I was having a tough time keeping anything down besides ginger ale. Zofran worked wonderfully for me. I hope you start feeling better soon!

  • I had morning sickness from the beginning to the end with my DD.  Every day puking, sometimes several times a day.  I lost 26 lbs before I delivered.  I had to go in to get fluids several times and ended up spending some quality time on bed rest towards the end because I became so weak.  Hang in there!

PS - I had ZERO morning sickness with DS.

  • Yes, 7 months of horrible morning sickness 24/7.  I took Zofran the whole time.  Nothing else worked.

  • Is Diclegis the same thing as Diclectin in Canada? B6/doxylamine? If so it's been around for ages and it's amazing. I took it for both pregnancies and it was a lifesaver . It's very safe as it was developed specifically for ms. Some people find it makes them drowsy but I didn't get that . Seriously, take it!!

  • I had horrible sickness and took Zofran with both pregnancies. Having crackers on my nightstand and eating a couple before getting up helped a little bit. With DS, I always walked around with Lifesaver mints in my pocket, as they helped with the nausea. With DD, it was Starburst chews.

  • i had HG with all three pregancies.  I have been on zofran, reglan and the unisom/B6 combo.  the zofran worked best for me in my 2nd pregnancy.  it didn't make the nausea go away, but it helped me not vomit as much.  it does make you horrifically constipated though.  it can also mess with your vision- i had trouble with my peripheral vison while on zofran and actually hit a parked car in a parking lot at my daughter's school.
my mom was an asshole to me during my first pregnancy and thought the HG was all in my head.  you have all my sorries.  i hope the diclegis works for you.  if it is the same as unisom/B6 it worked pretty well for me other than making me very sleepy.

  • I took Zofran.

I was in a 24 hour state of nausea.  I didn't have an appetite at all.  I would try and force myself to eat/drink but I would throw it up every time.  I couldn't hold anything down.  I couldn't go into the kitchen because any food smells would make me throw up and dirty dishes were the worst.  Sometimes just the movement from walking across the room would cause me to throw up.

Zofran helped a little but not a lot.  It allowed me to eat/drink without throwing up everything but I was still in a constant state of nausea and I still threw up daily.
