Anyone have a kiddo with occasional blue lips ??

I have noticed that sometimes when I get K out of the tub her lips are slightly purple. Now my house is cold no matter what I do and I only notice it when her hands and feet are cold too. She is acting normal when it happens and it goes away within minutes.

  • I've personally never had this happen to me, but just a couple days ago, a friend of my fb said she noticed her daugher had slightly bluish lips and she ended up having low blood sugar! This was not the first time either!

  • How cold are you talking about? If it seems like she's really cold then I would turn up the thermostat a few degrees.  What is the temperature of the bath water?  Maybe you could make the water a little bit warmer.  Hopefully it's nothing serious or health related.

  • DS sometimes has purple lips and shivers when we take him out of the bath if we don't get him in his pajamas fast enough. Once we get him dried off and warmed up it goes away. It has only happened right after a bath.

  • DH has this happen ALL the time. Honestly, it could be 80 degrees and still happen. He and his family are full Dutch and very fair. His cousin wears red lipstick all the time because if she doesn't people ask if she is okay or cold. Her lips are perpetually blueish purple. Is your LO fair skinned? If so, it may just be the ability to see blood through skin. As long as your LO is acting normal and getting enough iron in her diet I wouldn't worry.
  • Maybe try putting a space heater in the bathroom? Maybe worth a call to the pedi's nurse just for peace of mind.

  • DD has eczema so we can only give her lukewarm baths.  We use one of those vornado space heaters - heats the room up to a toasty 78 degrees.

However, I'm not sure it's an issue with your kid being cold.  I'd be worried about your kids circulatory and respiratory systems - maybe call your doctor?

Blue lips are not something you should brush off.  Please talk to your pediatrician, which will probably refer you to a pediatric cardiologist just in case.  Blue lips can be due to cold alone, however with young kids it may also mean a cyanotic condition.  Many kids with congenital heart defects don't get diagnosed at birth so symptoms like this should not be ignored.  Hopefully it is nothing, but it is better to be safe than sorry.  If you're concerned enough to ask here, you should definitely talk to your child's doctor about it.   It won't hurt to ask.

  • What @singingirl96 said. It can be nothing but it can be related to her heart so you def want to get it checked out.
  • Thanks for everyone's replies :) I found out DH was the same way when he was little, but took her to the ped anyway. He checked her O2 level and listened to her heart and is sure she is cold blooded :)
