IUD vs Pill

I'm sure this has been talked about but for some reason I can't find it!

I was on the pill for 7 years then i stopped and we got pregnant with DD1 then after her I was on the mini pill (because I was breastfeeding)! Then stopped that and got pregnant with DD2! So I do not have an issue with remembering to take a pill that is no problem... But this time around I am think DH and I are done with having kids but want to keep our options open incase we change our mind...
What is everyone's opinions on mini pill vs IUD? I have my follow up appointment on Monday so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do before my appointment! Thank you ladies in advance!

Re: IUD vs Pill

  • I really liked mirena. It didn't effect my milk, I didn't have a period and was able to get pregnant my first cycle after it was removed. The cramping after it was implanted isn't too bad. My MW had me take ibuprofen before my appointment and that really helped. I did have spotting for a couple weeks after, nothing major though. DH did mention he could feel the strings occasionally while DTD but overtime that got better.

  • If I were going back on BC for a while I'd do the IUD again. I had it after DD1 and it lightened my periods (though I had a lot of mid-cycle spotting). I was pregnant within 40 days of having it removed. The only big downside for me was it definitely lowered my sex drive.

I'm considering going on the mini pill this time. We're done having kids after DD2 and my H plans on getting snipped so I don't want to get an IUD if he's taking care of things on his end.

I've always had a good experience on the pill, so I'm starting a new one called Errin this weekend.  Hopefully it goes well.

Fun Fact:  my name is not Joe or anything like it, it's Erin so my doctor was highly amused by writing me the Rx

I was on Erin after my first and had no problems. That is probably what I'm going to do again.
  • I'm torn what to do.. DH and I always said two and done and he was going to get fixed but now we have 2 girls we kind of want to keep options open to maybe try for a boy... Thanks for all the opinions ladies!
  • I just had mirena placed last week. I chose it over the mini-pill because I didnt want to have to remember to take a pill everyday and because if you screw up, there is a large chance of pregnancy. We don't want to have another baby for a while. Had some cramping and pain while putting in it but nothing compared to labor. Midwives had me take ibuprofen before and then said take as needed for a few days. I did have a few days of bleeding/spotting  and cramps when breastfeeding but that has stopped now. I like that the only thing I have to do is check for the strings
  • I just talked with my MW yesterday at my 2 week PP appt. and I hold her what I was looking for in a BC method. I wanted something that would allow me to continue breastfeeding and I did not want something that prevents implantation rather than fertilization. (That is due to my beliefs.) That ruled out the IUD for me, so I will be on the pill. Remembering to take it isn't a problem for me since I'm on a medication that requires me to remember to take it daily, I will just do both at the same time.

  • I had a bad experience with the Mirena after DS. Lots of cramping and bleeding for three months until I had it taken out. I just started the mini pill today after my 6 week follow up and am hoping for a better experience!
  • I loved my IUD. There was cramping and pain when it was inserted, but after a day or so no issues. I had the paraguard IUD.

  • I had paragard and I loved it. I had no cramping after insertion and I didn't even feel it get removed. The only issue I had was heavy periods. Since it is nonhormonal it didn't mess with my supply or my fertility.
