Toddlers: 24 Months+

Worried about my 3 year old! Thoughts and opinions please!

So I know no one is a doctor and I am scheduling an appointment with her doc in the morning but I'm very worried about her and I want to know if any other mother is having issues with their toddler and sleep... She just turned 3 this past weekend on December 7th and for maybe the past year we've had issues with her falling asleep and even staying asleep. Over the past few weeks it's gotten TONS worse. At bedtime it takes her sometimes several hours to fall asleep. She will sit there and sing to herself and rock herself in her bed for hours... Finally fall asleep and then wake up again in the middle of the night and sometimes she's awake for 2-4 hours straight and then up for the day around 8am! She's stopped taking her one nap that we usually give her during the day and she's starting to get bags under her eyes. None of my other girls have done this, not the two older nor my 1 1/2 year old. I've never heard of a child doing this and I'm really starting to worry about her. She was born at 32 weeks but is all caught up developmentally and what not with a 3 year old. When this all started about a year ago, she wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night, she would just take FOREVER to get to sleep when we laid her down. She likes to sit there and sing to herself and rock herself in her bed and we had to take her out of her crib she was in at the time because while rocking she would hit the back of her head on the crib so much that she had a horrid bruise on the back of her head and it was scraped and bleeding. My grandma told me that her brother did that when he was little until he was about 5 years old but didn't stay awake or wake up like that, he just liked to rock. Like I said, she's at a 3 year old level and some of her skills are even at a 4 year old level. She's smart as a whip and no issues that would make me think there was anything mentally really going on. I'm just lost!

Sorry for the novel!

  • I agree about maybe trying melatonin.  Talk to the doctor about it.  And good luck.

  • my friend was having issues with her toddler regarding her eczema and she took her to acupuncture because nothing else was working. the acupuncturist told her she works with a number of toddlers and even babies for a number of reasons and sleep was one of the things she mentioned. oddly enough the eczema cleared up!
I cant imagine my two year old sitting through acupuncture though!
  • My niece does this. She turned 5 in November an has been doing his her entire life. She is also ADHD. Her father told me that her doctor said she is like this with sleep because of the ADHD. She is on a regular melatonin regimine and finally sleeps for more than an hour or two per night and has mostly stopped hitting herself to stay awake. Melatonin may be the way to go.
