Nearly 4-year-old won't poop in the potty

Hi Ladies,

My youngest son will turn four on 1/27, and absolutely will not poop on the potty. When we initially potty trained him he pooped and peed on the potty from jump, and then quickly stopped using the potty for poop. He's done it again on occasion but it has now been since September. I tried keeping him in underwear, but that got gross fast! So now every time he has to go he runs and hides under the dining room table and poops in his pull-up on all fours. We've tried rewards, we've tried time outs, we've tried ignoring it. Just really at a loss, and any suggestions would be welcome!

  • I should also mention that at about the same time he regressed, he also started waking several times a night and has continued to do so. He's up at least four times a night and then up for the day by 6 am at the latest. The only change that coincided with these behaviors is that I began watching two other little ones in our home a few hours a day. I know that could have been bothering him. I haven't watched them in a couple weeks now because we're getting ready to move out of state (I know, another thing to trigger change!).

  • is he afraid or just being stubborn? Sometimes really awesome rewards help. Not just stickers and charts. Something really amazing that he really likes.
  • It sounds like something has shifted in him.  Maybe it's the other kids, maybe it's a food sensitivity, maybe it's a newly acquired fear?  When you ask him about the change (in pooping), what does he say?

  • This sounds like my daughter! She'll be four in 2 months. She will occasionally poop on the potty. And some times she just needs a diaper to poop in. I tried the whole oh my goodness we are out of diapers and we can't buy more. Well that worked about once and started a constipation cycle :-/ So I don't suggest doing that. So now I ask if she wants to try the potty. If she says no I don't press the issue. If she goes on the potty it's like a party at our house! It seems to be getting better. Best of luck to you.
