Swaddling

So LO is a month old today and I am struggling with some of the same sleep issues as many of you. I am wondering if it is possible or if any of you have A LO who hates to be swaddled? I am beginning to think this is the case with DD. I used a sleepsack with the wings to swaddle and about five minutes after I lay her down I hear grunting and see her wiggling, trying to get her arms out. She breaks out of any blanket and frankly I'm amazed she can break out of the sleepsack. I want her to like it because I feel like it would help her to fall asleep and stay asleep longer but I'm at a loss for what to do or if I should just give up and swaddle her arms out.

  • Try this before you quit swaddling:

  • Ds2 hated to be swaddled. Absolutely hated it. We quit doing it. We put him in long sleeved fleece sleep sack jammies. He slept in his swing for the first three months and then transitioned to a crib no problem

  • We got the swaddle sleep sack that allows for arms out. LO feels so much more comfort when she can put her hands by her face; the same position she was in when she was on the inside.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

  • My first two hated being swaddled. This LO enjoys it but sometimes wants her hands and other times doesn't care.

  • At first DD hated the "swaddleme." After about a week of fussing, about it swaddling has become her cue for bedtime.

She still will fuss for 5-10min but then fall asleep and stay asleep for a good 4 hours at night.

  • @karissa2009 how do you do the swaddle with his hands by his face? I think this might be perfect for her?
  • We swaddle arms out during the day and arms in at night. Ever since then, Astin sleeps 2 hours longer (on avg) during the night!

  • We swaddle arms out in the Halo sleep sack with wings. He hates having his arms constricted. It never was a problem for us, but now that his startle reflex is almost all gone it's a total non issue. He sleeps 4-5 hour stretches at night.

Colin HATES being swaddled and squirms like a maniac.  We double swaddle him at night and he still sometimes busts his arms out by the time he wakes up 5-6 hours later.  If we don't swaddle him, we're lucky if he makes it an hour or two asleep before he starts flailing around, frustrated that he can't get his fingers or thumb into his mouth.
You might try the Miracle Blanket.  It's a pain in the butt taking them in and out of it during the night, but it is really good at restraining our strong little struggler.

  • You need the ergococoon! It zips from the top and the bottom (so you don't have to unswaddle to change a diaper). No where for the arms to break out of unless you unsnap the arm holes. Its also stretchy so they arent too restricted and helps regulate body temp. These have saved my life at night!
