So I was just down in the local supermarket and as I was leaving I saw a toddler and a baby,no more than five months old, alone in a car with no adults to around. I waited till the mother came back (10 mins later)and then I left.My DH didn't want me to confront her but now I feel like I should have. I don't normally tell others how to parent their children but I just thought that was ridiculous. I was very close to calling the cops!how could a mother leave her two babies alone in a car at night???ugh, Sorry vent over!!

  • Loading the player...
  • I think I would have called the police. I don't think any excuse is good enough to leave a toddler and a 5 month old alone in a vehicle.

  • I'm in Texas and idk if every state is like this but, here, you get in big trouble for shit like that because in the summer it gets smoldering hot inside cars within seconds. Even in the winter, that has to be some sort of neglect charge.

  • I would have called the cops ASAP. I have before in a situation exactly like this. Those children need to have social services involved.

  • I was so close to calling but then she came back and I left! I was so angry I didn't even say anything because I was afraid of losing the plot altogether with her!i feel like by the time the cops had come she would have been back and gone! I took her plate number, maybe I'll call them with that!

  • Children have died being left in cars like that. Definitely, call the police. Even if it's just with the plate number, those kids need to be protected.

    Vote for call police. Inappropriate.
  • I would have called the cops but not confronted her. This past summer I called the cops on a guy who left his dog in his car while it was 90 out. The cops didn't arrive in time but I gave them his plates and they tracked him down (they actually called me later that day to thank me). A lady confronted the guy as he came out and I was afraid he was going to physically harm her.

  • Another vote for call the cops but no confrontation. With the call you're doing what you can to help the kids without putting yourself in harms way, you never know how people will react.
  • I don't get how people can do this. I would have called the cops. The only thing I have done is leave LO in the car when I park right in front of an ARM and am still within 10 ft of the car. And I only did that because it was pouring.

Not only due to the kids dying/freezing/heat stroke in the car, but to leave your kids without being in sight of them anywhere outside your home seems like a risk in this day and age.

This. I wouldn't let my children out of my sight when out of the house. It was dark out and I just don't understand how any mother would do this!

  • You should have called the cops! That's not about telling others how to parent, it would be protecting those poor children. Thankfully you waited and made sure they were ok.
  • I leave notes on windshields when people leave their pets in the car.

So I would have called the cops but probably after my initial shock of even seeing children left alone in a car. Where I'm at, we have a huge issue with people kidnapping children and trafficking them. Our city is ranked fourth in the nation for sex trafficking and I do not take that lightly.

Jeez that's scary!! Yes this was my concern, or that they would get too cold, or that they would choke etc. I just called the cops and they said it wasn't illegal!!!!! But that I could call social services in the morning during office hours!! Wtf??

I would call the cops with her license plate number.

I'm glad you waited to make sure they were okay.

Totally illegal!! Could be child endangerment. At least in California it would have been child endangerment.
  • I would definitely call as well. Anything can happen in that time frame. In my area a father left his two toddlers home alone for 10 minutes and the home caught fire and they died.
  • Another vote for call the cops. With all the stories on the news about children dying in situations like this I can't believe people still do it.

  • You called and they said it wasn't illegal!!! That makes me nervous about your local PD!

Children should NEVER be left alone in the car! Shame on that parent! I would call social services...if she/he will leave them in the car in the winter who is to say that she/he wouldn't leave them in the car in the winter.

Im in Ireland and apparently it's a matter for social services which I called this morning and reported her! I'm with you, I would have thought it was illegal!
