ABA and insurance

We found out this am that because our insurance is a self funded plan, they are not mandated to cover ABA. I am devastated. To us, not doing ABA is not an option. Unfortunately, like some other families I'm sure, we lie between not qualifying for state/federal coverage (as we make too much money), but cannot afford to pay out of pocket. The ABA group we consulted with suggested 20hrs week and gave us an out of pocket discount at $125/hr ($130k a year!). We are in the process of appealing, but other than that do I have any other options? I feel angry and so heartbroken. Sorry if this has been discussed multiple times before.

  • You may want to look at any nearby universities and see if they have a training program for BCBA's. There is a university near where we live that charges $20 an hour for student providers. Also look for any foundations that may offers reduced rates. If you have an Easter Seals near you they also tend to have access to grants or a sliding scale. Finally, there are grants you can apply for. I'm sorry! I know how incredibly frustrating insurance is. I have been fighting our insurance since my son got his diagnosis!
