Water for baby

My pedi recommended giving LO a couple ounces of tap water daily in a sippy cup at his 6 month check up. Is this the normal recommendation? I bought him the nuk sippy-cup he can get it in his mouth but once he tastes it's water he doesn't want to drink it. He is definitely not getting much maybe 1oz all day(probably less) anyone else experience this or have any suggestions?

Re: Water for baby

  • Yeah. I do it. He's just learning how to use a sippy. They are too little for juice and personally...i think bm or formula would be a waste until they know how to drink from one.

    It's pretty common.

  • We haven't had our 6 month appointment yet but we have been giving him a little bit of water for about a month or so now. He likes to drink the water out of regular cup or water bottle. We might skip the sippy!
  • Our pediatrician had the same recommendation.  I think at this age, it's more about getting them used to water than any real benefit in drinking it.  Our LO doesn't seem to get the sippy cup quite yet, and when he does manage to get a few sips out, he makes a face like it's nasty.
  • Ok thanks ladies, I think they need the fluoride from the water. He will drink out of my regular cup but I want him to be able to do it hiself when he's ready.
@kari5186 I saw that too but forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder! Going to order one today ;)

  • @kari5186 thanks for the idea! I'm ordering some right now. I also like the idea of straw over sippy. Our pediatrician reccomeded that we skip the sippy cups.
  • My LO will be 6 months on the 21st and he's had some water in a sippy cup a few times. I'm not sure he likes the water but he looooves chewing on the soft spout of the cup. And he handles on the cup help him be able to get it to his mouth.
