Puzzle Recommendations?

Does anyone have any puzzles that they either love or hate? DD still puts everything in her mouth, but she's coordinated enough to start playing with simple puzzles and I'm not sure what to get. It sounds like all of the Melissa and Doug puzzles have stickers on top and I know that would not last long.

Re: Puzzle Recommendations?

  • We have a HAPE one and it has held up to constant biting much better than our M&D one.  Bonus, she can say "cat" and "dog" when I hold up the pieces.  When I hold up "fish" she says "ffff" which evolves into a blowing bubbles thing...  But she does not say any of the M&D shapes...perhaps b/c I do not get it out as often since it's getting damaged.

  • All our puzzles are M&D puzzles. They are big and chunky and are painted on. They have a bunch of different types though. I like their chunky puzzles best.

This for us too - she especially loves the one without knobs that has jungle-type animals.  But she does like the knob puzzles too - mostly because they're easy to hold on to and bang :)  but I like that she's getting exposure to shapes, and she's even starting to put circles, triangles, and squares back in their correct place!

  • We have a M&D and a plastic Fischer price, but DD is not so interested in either yet beyond taking all the pieces out, tasting them, and then going on to the next activity.

  • Sounds like I may have misjudged M&D puzzles.

  • Well, to follow up, our M&D puzzle is painted, but the corners have broken down due to mouthing.  The HAPE one is also chunky and it has held up.  I didn't have a bias before, but I do not like the M&D puzzles as much at all.  HAPE makes green toys and has as good or better reputation and probably lower toxicity as M&D and their stuff costs about the same.

I checked out the HAPE products after reading your post. I had not heard of the company and they have some cool stuff that gets good reviews. Now I want the play kitchen. In addition to puzzles they have this cool shape/color sorter.
