Fussy at 5 AM- daily! Thoughts? (Longish)

I need some thoughts on this-- The past 6 or 7 nights my LO goes down at 9 or 10 PM for a 5 hour stretch (yay!), wakes to feed around 2-3 AM and goes right back down (yay again!) only to wake up, like clockwork, between 4:30 and 5:30 AM screaming bloody murder. He doesn't need a diaper change, he doesn't want to eat, he doesn't want a pacifier. He is arching his back so it's obviously gas or tummy problems, right? This lasts for  up to 2 hours while we try to console him in different positions and try to help him fart or burp. He's not comfortable until he finally passes all the gas (and it's a LOT!) and takes a giant dump.

He has always had a poop around this time of morning, even when he was brand new, I used to call it the "5 AM diaper change from hell" because he would fill up like 3 diapers because the poop just kept coming each time I'd get a clean dipe on him. But it has just recently started to hurt him, apparently.

He poops and farts all day with very little fussing, if any, so I just don't know why this one hurts him so much. Is this totally normal or I should I be doing something about it? I started the Gerber Soothe Probiotics two days ago to see if that helps, but I know it takes a while for that to build up. His poops look like they are supposed to and these look no different than any other poops of the day. Sigh.

Sorry that got long! Have some ice cream for listening to me whine.

  • Is it consecutive crying for hours? Could be colic?...but then again I think their little bodies are just trying to adjust. My little man tends to have explosive diapers between 2 and 3 am. Guess it's just the schedule his body is on for clearing out!

My baby seems to also have a fussy timeframe but at 2am. I was worried she's colic (they say it starts at around 3 weeks- she's 3 wks 4 days). I've been giving her gripe water and try my best to calm her down. I also rub her tummy and burp her (she's also gassy) then rock her till she falls asleep. After explaining it to my pedi she basically narrowed it down to my poor eating habits this past week. No time to eat anything really healthy and cereal with milk was my primary source of nutrition. She said that it's not too bad for me but terrible for her so I've been making time to prepare healthier meals and switched to soy milk for now. I'm hoping this helps her out. I hope your situation resolves itself and mine too.

ETA- that I'm breastfeeding and supplementing with gentle ease and she said that it's definitely my milk because gentlease is very mild and shouldn't be causing the gas or fuss.

  • I don't think it's colic... and it doesn't really last long enough and we can calm him down for 10-15 minutes at a time by holding him and patting his back.

DS isn't so bad where he cries out and is awake fully but every day around that same time he grunts every few minutes and sleep cries as he tries to fart/poop. Until it comes out he just does this. I call it his morning farts. I have no clue if it is normal. I also use the Gerber soothe drops but saw no difference. I tried actual gas drops yesterday but saw no difference. Jealous of your five hr stretch btw!
Ah, yes. I wish there was a magic cure. I am starting to feel like it's just something we have to live through til his system matures... hopefully weeks, not months... haa.

  • During the day is he moved around more after he eats? Do you feed him during the night before 5 a.m. And then he is put back to bed right away? Maybe the milk is settling different because he is laying down right away?
  • I was experiencing the same thing, and then I stopped taking my vitamin before bed. He doesn't do that anymore. Not sure if you take a vitamin before bed, but it may be worth a try.

  • Aya does the same, only hers is usually around 5 or so in the evening. She will scream for a good while for no apparent reason and then the toots/poo start. If she is able to nurse through it, she will whine and whimper through the discomfort. Once she passes all the gas she is happy as can be.

  • My LO needs de-gassed around the same time every morning. It takes us about 20 minutes to get it all and he's pretty sad til then.  =(
