Juicing

Does anyone know if juicing is safe? I really only like to eat broccoli and asparagus but I can tolerate spinach if it is in a juice form. My sister juices and I would love to get all my nutrients in one glass and be done. I don't know if that's safe though. U don't have a doctor to advise so I'm asking experienced moms or anyone who knows anything about the topic! Thanks in advance!

Re: Juicing

  • Juicing is absolutely safe if it is used as a supplement and not a meal replacement. If you really hate vegetables, you are better off juicing and just downing it once a day than doing nothing.

The positive effects of juicing do not erase the negative affects of having a poor diet. If you are eating chicken fingers and fries and no fruits or veggies all day and washing it down with soda, a veggie juice will add in some nutrients but not make the junk you are eating okay for you.

We have a juicer and love it because we buy a ton of produce and sometimes have some left at the end of the week that will end up going bad if we dont freeze it or juice it. Strawberries for example... If I know we wont eat them before they spoil I juice them and drink it down to get those nutrients. But we eat a ton of fruits and veggies as part of our daily diet anyways so that is why.

Veggies are also great for you because of all the fiber that allows you to process food effectively and feel fuller so you don't overeat (an easy thing to do during pregnancy). When you juice, you are not getting the fiber of the vegetable.

  • Just realized what I said about strawberries isn't really accurate. If I juice berries I usually mix with some orange juice and freeze into Popsicles or mix with greek yogurt and ice for a smoothie. They are high in sugar by themselves so I prefer to mix them.

I never let dark greens go to waste because they are so full of nutrients that are hard to get elsewhere. Spinach for example... if we bought a bunch of spinach but still 1/2 is left over a week later and is about to go to waste I will juice it and just drink it quick to get those nutrients. We try to plan our menu without waste though, so this doesn't happen much at all.
  • We did a 3 day juice cleanse... worst idea ever! I felt horrible. However now I drink 1-2 glasses of fresh juice a day (normally a green juice and some fruity juice) I am not a big veggie eater so this is filling in the gaps. I feel so much better than I did pre-juice. My acne has cleared up and my face looks amazing lol  I have lost weight but I am also dieting and working out.
My fiance (who only considers a greek salad or a ceasar (spelling lol) loves juicing. He only drinks fresh juice and water.  My son goes crazy for apple carrot juice.

I also juice and freeze into cubes  my favorite is juicing raspberries blue berries an orange and some grapes and i mix with sparkling water (my sis even adds rum to hers lol)

All in all I feel that juicing has helped me be healthier. However I will never use it to replace actual food.
  • if you do decide to try it I recommend The Juicing Bible as a book to read. Great info and yummy recipes
  • Ditto Koala. You need to be careful about how much juice you're taking in though, too, because you're pregnant. Juice is full of unnecessary sugar and juicing can be hard on your kidneys. You also cannot get all your nutrients in one glass - you still need to be taking prenatal vitamins and eating a wide variety of foods in order to get what you and baby need.

  • Sort of related - this morning my husband informed me that we need to clean up our diet before ttc in a month. Seriously I don't know how much healthier we could actually be eating so it made me laugh. I reminded him that 90% of the preggers I know live off junk food and somehow manage to have healthy babies. We don't eat red meat, prepare all of our meals, eat 6-7 times a day and eat more fruits and veggies than anyone I know IRL. Not recommending that of course, just that the body is highly adaptable and for millions of years women who were facing famine or poor diets have birthed healthy children so the body has ways to increase the odds of prenatal health.

Better to treat your body well of course... just throwing this out there!

The consensus is juice as a supplement but still try to eat well, drink plenty of water, and take prenatal vitamins for the niacin and folate. Do not try to drink your calories or try any other fad diet while pregnant. This is a bad idea for too many reasons to list.
  • I don't juice, but I have a smoothly every morning. I find it to be an easy, convenient way to have a healthy (and portable) breakfast. I use the following ingredients: almond milk, Greek yogurt, spinach, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pineapple, raw oats. It fills me up and is pretty tasty. I thro in other fruits/veggies sometimes, too.

  • All I can think of when I hear the term "juicing" is John Pinette:

She sold me a juicer. Third day, I juiced a ham.

  • I definitely eat. I'm just stating that to ensure I get the proper nutrients is juicing a safe option. Right now the only thing I have an appetite for as far as green veggies is broccoli and asparagus. But let me be clear in that I get my protein and fiber and everything else.
  • I'm going to try that it sounds good!
