ER with no anesthesia?

Hi again ladies, it's old lurky-loo here...

I must be crazy, because DH and I are all ready to go for IVF# 2 in Jan. Last time I checked in a few weeks ago, I was having to wean H, which went well - and surprisingly, I have actually enjoyed a bit of the freedom (he didn't skip a beat). All in all that was so much less stressful than anticipated - I appreciate all the advice on that!

My question today is has anyone had their ER without general anesthesia? I was out cold last time, but there is a $600 charge for it and this time I have a choice (different RE because we moved). While $600 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of the cost of my cycle, that's a new set of tires for my car! If you have experience awake, do you mind to share with me? They mentioned some IV painkillers and the like, just no general. I want to make sure I can handle it before I make a decision.

They don't do generals at my clinic. Just a dose of Ativan and some IV sedation. I was able to watch and talk through the whole thing although I was dopey. I don't remember the pain really. Maybe a bit of discomfort? Less than getting my IV started! I say go for the cheaper option. You should really be fine.

I definitely wouldn't suggest trying to do it unmedicated. From what I understand it is pretty painful. I doubt you were under general anesthesia the first time. With general anesthesia they have to put in a breathing tube. You probably had twilight anesthesia where you usually are asleep and don't remember the procedure. I had a lap surgery and another surgery where the surgeon had to go in through my neck. Those were general anesthesia. My D&Es and ERs were under twilight anesthesia.

I have twilight sleep and was thankful given that when it was done and I woke up they told me that they had two nurses practically kneeling on my stomach trying to get my left ovary to move close enough for them to retrieve the eggs from it. I can't really imagine having that happen had I been awake, albeit drugged, and I have a fairly high pain tolerance. Granted, that doesn't happen to everyone, but I guess you just never know.
