Tummy time

I searched and didn't see anything recently but I'm curious about tummy time. My LO will be three months tomorrow and still absolutely hates tummy time. We have tried everything- flat on floor, on bed, with & without boppy/rolled up blanket, over my legs etc. He lasts a minute at most and can't get his head up more than an inch or two if at all before the frantic screaming starts. I realize every baby develops differently but I'm just curious...how well does your LO handle tummy time now that they are a little older?

Re: Tummy time

  • DS isn't much of a tummy time fan either. He's gotten a lot better though. For a while, the only tummy time that he would stand was when we laid him on our chest and leaned slightly back while talking to him and making eye contact with him the whole time. After a few weeks of that, he's letting us put him on the floor now.

He'll still start crying when he starts bopping his head up and down and smacking his face against the floor. We usually call it quits at that point though, lol.

  • My LO doesn't like it for very long.  He can hold his head up well for a little while, but then he gets tired and starts bobbing his head up and down or just puts his face down.  And he starts crying.  He likes to lay on our chest though.

  • @roosterwrangler thanks, I'll have to try that leaning slightly back. I have tried laying down w him on my chest but that usually just puts him right to sleep. Yea we call it quits when the face smacking/drool all over the face happens too haha poor little guys
  • DD just dislikes being on the floor. I think it's because she can't see everything. We started to put the boppy on the couch and put her there right away in the morning. She likes to watch us get ready in the morning. Won't be able to do this much longer though I'm afraid she will launch herself off the couch.

  • My daughter was the same way. I started to prop her belly up on one of my king size bed pillows that is pretty soft. I basically put her whole torso on the pillow and her legs are on the flat floor. I did this about a week for a fee min at a time bc that's all she lasted. Like 3 to 4 min. Sunday she held her head up high and proud and has been ever since. Stick with it it may work for u guys too
  • My little one hates tummy time as well. Every time we try it she starts crying non-stop. I've been using the boppy pillow for tummy time that seems to help a bit.
  • DS has been ok with it but he LOVES naked tummy time! Maybe give that a try; sometimes less restriction from clothes makes them happier

  • He hates it!! We've tried everything. We still attempt it on the floor, but most of his tummy time is from being worn, on our chest or being held high on our shoulder.

  • DS sometimes doesn't mind it and other times he just not into it. When he's not in the mood he'll just get lazy and put his head down. When he doesn't want tummy time I try to keep him looking over my shoulder to keep him from just laying on his back all the time.

  • I am so glod to hear I'm not the only one! I was beginning to wonder if our little man was getting behind in his milestones. He does really well looking over my shoulder, but does not like flat tummy time at all! He does a little better with the boppy.

  • My LO hates being flat on the floor. She will be content for about 5 minutes on the boppy (torso propped up, legs on floor) then she starts bobbing and yelling at me in baby language. To get another 5 minutes out of her, I put on our baby visual stimulation app and she'll hold her head and chest high to watch that. Not the best thing to do but it's what works for us.

  • My LO hates tummy time too.  He starts fussing and crying about 2 minutes into it.  We pick him up after about 3-5 minutes depending on the amount of fussiness.  I think he gets frustrated.  We are persistent on making sure he has tummy time and today he rolled over from his tummy to back!  I didn't see it because I am at work, but DH is home with him today.  He put him back on his stomach and he rolled again.  He did it a third time and he got pissed off and fussy.  So, don't worry about his not liking tummy time delaying milestones.  They will still happen!

  • Have you tried putting LO on the arm of the couch for some tummy time? You can't turn your back for a second obviously but my DD seems to like that, she'll hangout for a good 5 minutes or so before getting bored. Although she does pretty good now on her mat but she hated it for a while. Now that she can really hold up her head even without elbow support she enjoys it a lot more and she gets interested with her toys I put In front of her.
  • Have you tried rolling up a towel and putting it under your LO, it just helps prop them up a bit and they like it more than just being flat. Our LO can stand tummy time for a little while, but then starts to sook, so we have been told to just do regular small doeses of it, as they really need to be doing tummy time. So we leave our LO to at least do a few minutes at a time and do that a few times a day, we have also been told not to pick her up straight away when she is just being sooky about it, just because of how important tummy time is for them.
  • yeah, DD hates it. I feel bad because the pediatrician wants her doing more of it, but she just doesn't like it. We wear her and hold her a lot so I know she's using her muscles in other ways, but I feel like she's never going to roll over since she hates being on the floor. A good day and we can get 5 mins out of it.

  • My baby hates it, too, but I found that he can deal with it more when I drive my toddler's little yellow and black tractors around in front of his face. Today he watched them for about 15 minutes!
  • My little one hates it too. I try doing it when she's in a good mood and she may smile through it the first few minutes but it only lasts 5 mins or so. She did roll last week though and I've been trying to get her to do it again but no luck. I've found that she lasts a lot more when she's on the couch or bed vs the floor so that may be something to try.
  • My LO is not a fan either. We have been somewhat successful with puttin a mirror below him and he'll get distracted by it. Good luck! It's tough to keep at it when it makes them so upset!
  • A is 15 weeks and is just now getting to where she will tolerate being on the floor for more than a few minutes. Last night she tolerated it for about 5 minutes, by far her longest stretch. She's been very into mirrors lately and I found a toy that she can look in the mirror when she's on her tummy--it seems to help a bit.
