Babies: 3 - 6 Months

sleeping position ?

Do you let your lo sleep on their belly?

If so, when did you start? Did your pedi ok it? Does it worry you at all?

DD's pedi gave the go ahead at last appointment. She's 5 months. But I'm still nervous about it. Just curious what others are doing.

Re: sleeping position ?

  • With DD1, she did it on her own.  When I walked in to check on her, I freaked out because she was on her stomach.  I put her back on her back but she rolled again.  I talked to the pedi about it and he said as long as she was doing it on her own and she could move her head from side to side, then to let her be.  I think she was closer to 6 or 7 months though when she started doing that.  DD2 still has made no attempt to roll (stomach to back OR back to stomach).  She is 4 months.  I plan on following her cues but will always put her down on her back.

  • My LO is a tummy sleeper. He started sleeping on his tummy as soon as he rolled from his back to his stomach which was around 4 months. I used to get very freaked out about it, especially when he hadn't learned how to roll from his tummy to his back, but as soon as I would flip him over, he would roll back to his tummy again. It was a battle I was never going to win. Now he is 6 months, can roll in both directions and still sleeps on his tummy all night.

  • The orthotics specialist (my LO has moderate brachycelphagy) said that we should place him on his back to sleep, but not to correct him if he rolls onto his belly or side, he's 5.5 months.

DS's started at 4.5 months. I still put him on his back to sleep but have let him sleep however he'd like since he started rolling. If he can get himself to his tummy and back again I see no reason to worry. His pedi told us to put him down to sleep on his back and emphasized letting him get to his tummy by himself.
This. Pedi said if they can get there on their own, it's fine. My baby sleeps better on his tummy!!  He usually starts on his back, rolls to his side and is on tummy with bum in the air eventually.

  • LO has slept on her tummy since she was about 2 weeks old. She has had enough head control to turn it if she needs to, and it's work great for us. Good luck!
