Mamas of late walkers... (Rusalka)

So, DD is nearly 16 months and she's not walking. She's a professional cruiser and pusher of her little grocery cart, and she'll walk when we're holding her hands up - even just one hand - but she immediately sits down anytime I try to let go and doesn't try to take steps between things that are close. She doesn't even stand independently. I've seen her do it twice, maybe, for a few seconds, but that's about it.

When I took her to the pediatrician at 15 months she wasn't worried and said it was just a confidence thing, but I can't help but worry. She was a breech baby until about 35 weeks, and I read somewhere that can affect their motor development? I feel like her verbal and fine motor skills are right on track, so, I know I shouldn't really worry, but I can't help it.

Any stories to share? I know I've bugged you all about this before, but now I'm thinking even just about the standing thing... surely she should be standing?!

Re: Mamas of late walkers... (Rusalka)

  • DD#1 was a late walker.  She was almost 15 mos.  She would "walk" along the couch, or coffee tables, etc., for almost a month.  She would never stand on her own or let go.  One afternoon, out of nowhere, she just took off across the living room.  Then she went down the hall.  It was amazing, she never tripped, never fell, she had it!  It was like she wanted to be really sure she had it before she tried.  This has certainly carried over into her personality, she is still overly cautious as an 8 year old.  Hope this helps, I know what it is like to worry about developmental milestones, DD#1 was way behind on almost all of them.

  • Lucas was not breech, but he didn´t start walking until he was almost 15 months old. He was like your DD...cruising, standing, walking with our help, etc. and then one day out of nowhwere he just took off on his own! I was worried too, but they know when they are ready. The good thing about him having so much practice time before he actually walked is that by the time he was walking, he was very steady on his feet, good balance, hardly ever tripping or falling like most babies! :-)

  • I had a late walker too. I ended up buying those shoes with the squeakers in them to encourage her. She liked the noise and wanted to make more of it, so she walked. I think I bought Sneaker Squeakers on zulily.

  • Thanks for sharing your stories, everyone. I'm just going to keep trying to give her as many opportunities I can and trust that she's got her own agenda.

  • DS did not walk until 15 months and he really didn't start standing independently until like RIGHT before he started walking.  I'm talking like within a week.  Because I feel like that's probably a very natural progression...you stand and then you start walking.  I feel like it would probably be less common to be standing and then not walk until 4 months later, you know what I mean?  But honestly it was almost simultaneous the standing/walking.  I kept saying, "He's never going to walk, he's not even standing yet!"  And then he started to stand up and like 3 days later he was walking I feel like.  So it will all happen very fast I bet.

You are probably right! I'm heartened because, of all of the places she could've stood up, of course, last night she stood up for about 10 seconds in the bath (I was in there with her at least) and just beamed at me like, look at what I can do! So, we'll see!

  • awesome job E! I'm so anticipating that she'll turn into a pro now that she's found her footing! Standing in the bath is *major*, so slippery
She was SO proud of herself. She stood again this morning when I was folding laundry, just grinning from ear to ear. I would love for her to be walking by Christmas... I just can't wait for her to be able to run around and play, even though folks keep saying I'll regret it once she does :P The knees on her clothes, though! And I don't really feel good about taking her outside in cold weather, since she's crawling around and getting all over snowy.

Way to go Miss E! Haha the standing in the bath - I swear they take more delight in it strictly because I'm saying "Sit your bum down!" the entire time. I finally gave up. I have Ozzie the Octo covering the spout so there's little risk of much more than a bruised ego.

OMG, that is so cute! We have the Skip Hop whale because it's what the safety folks from the hospital DH works for installed. BUMMER.

  • My LO is only 8 months and barely army crawling, so no personal experience here. But, a speech pathologist told me that she has noticed that speech and motor skills seem to be opposites in that those with strong motor skills are a little slower to develop speech and vice versa. She gave me an example of when another child who was the same age as her son was able to inform her that her son was eating Cheerios off the floor, while her son could barely get out "mama". Yet this other child had much less developed motor skills! They develop their skills at such different rates

That's about where DD was! She army-crawled for the longest time and we didn't think she'd "proper" crawl, but now that's what she's been doing for months. I don't think DD's verbal skills are particularly advanced - she has maybe eight words, plus a handful of signs? - but it's always good to try and remember that they go at their own pace.
