Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleeping Schedule for 9 wk old

Hi ladies. My 9 week old has pretty much set his own sleeping schedule, but I'm not sure how to tweek it. He usually goes to bed at 11 pm and I would like him to fall asleep by 9 pm because I am a working mom, and I wake up for work at 6 am, and would like to go to sleep earlier than 11 pm. Is there a way to slowly move his schedule so that he goes down at 9 pm, or will babies make their own schedule and stick to it?

  • DS is in bed by 7 most nights. He's one day shy of 8 weeks and I've done it with him since week two. Have you tried just putting him down earlier? DD was the same. With her I ended up doing the earlier bedtime at around 4 weeks because she was getting overtired and just screaming from 7-10 every night.

  • Are your babies sleeping through the night?  What do you do about the last feeding of the night if they go in so early? My son is 9 weeks and has started sleeping 7-8 hours but we put him down at 11.  I guess I'm confused how they can hang on with the same amount of food but sleep longer!  Maybe it just comes with age.

7-8 hours IS sleeping through the night for a 9 week old.  The earlier bedtime just comes with age.

OP: my DS used to go to bed for the night at 11pm and then over time it got earlier and earlier, and now it's 7pm but his wake up time for the day never really changed and also over time he cut out the overnight feeds too.  He always cluster fed before the 11pm bedtime and I started to notice that he would have fallen asleep for good for the night earlier and earlier, so we just bumped up the bedtime routine and he went with it.  It's not going to happen over night though, like a PP said, up it by 15 minute increments. He'll want to go to bed earlier as he gets old. Make sure you have a consistent bedtime routine too. I am sure that helps. Babies thrive on routine and consistency. A bath in lavender is nice too.

  • Thanks for the advice!  I think we are almost there so we'll give it more time.

  • LO was going to bed late mostly because we had trouble putting her down for the night and she kept waking. Establishing a more regular routine incl dim light and quiet at bedtime and reintroducing the swaddle have really helped the most. Se went from bedtime at 10-11pm to now at 7-7:30. She sleeps a total of 12 hours at night. Usually 7-9 hours at the first go, then wake to feed and sleep the rest. Last night she went 11 hours before waking. I was floored! I kept checking on her to make sure she was okay, but she was just tired I guess. Anyway, she does eat a lot in the evening and AM.

Be patient and it will all come together. It doesn't happen overnight. It can take months. Then you get a little set-back with a cold, teething, reaching a new milestone, all sorts of things! Just keep up  your bedtime/nightime routine and the rest will fall into place.
