Things that surprise you about your baby.

This is going to sound pretty juvenile, but for the sake of honesty...

Farts. I knew that babies farted, but sweet fancy Moses I'm impressed. Every time I change his diaper, I get punched in the face by a horrible invisible fart cloud and I can't help but laugh. And when he farts so loud that I can hear it across the room...oy.

What surprises you about your baby (aside from the obvious overwhelming love)?

Edited because swiping is hard.

  • 1) Old man sounding farts

    2) How much they can grow in such a short time.  I swear she gets bigger after naps sometimes!

  • How much she would loooooove breastfeeding. And not just for the food. It's like her favorite activity. I think she would have a boob in her mouth 70% of the time if I would let her. Oh, and she pretty much refuses bottles. I was *not* going to have a baby that refused bottles. Ha.

This minus bottle refusal. She had to take one at week 3 when I had to go back to my Wednesday night class. She loooooves being on the boob too!

  • 1. The amount of spit up. A small burp cloth does nothing to catch the volume that comes out of my LO sometimes.

    2. The smell of his poop and farts. Gag.

    3. He would refuse the bottle. I thought it would be the other way around, that he would prefer the bottle over my boob. Nope. He also refuses the pacifier and I want him to take one so bad.

  • I'm surprised by how independent she is.  She doesn't like to be held while sleeping.  She falls asleep on her own- we put her to bed awake..

Her GAS is ridiculous as well.  She burps and farts louder and more often than DH sometimes.  She's such a lady.
  • I have a few...

    1. Umm, no one told me that little boys get erections. That shit freaked me out the first time I saw it and I had to google it to make sure it was normal.

    2. The amount of poop that can come from such a small person.

    3. He burps like a grown ass man, it makes me laugh every time and never gets old.

    4. And I do what I want so I am going to talk about the overwhelming love. I never knew I could love a guy so much that is so indifferent to my presence.

I just laughed outloud and almost woke up my LO. I was shocked when I saw this as well.

I knew babies had loud, smelly farts, but I had no idea DS would fart as much as he does and for as long as he does. I mean he'll fart all day long for like 5 minutes straight I feel like.

I was surprised how quickly he gave up the paci. It only lasted a few weeks. You try to put it in his mouth now and he glares and you and spits it out. He has quite the 'tude when he wants to.

The things he enjoys looking at. A lot of the time they're the most mundane things, like the corner of the ceiling.

  • Yes, definitely the erection thing. It still surprises me every morning when I go to change his diaper.

  • I agree with the gas! Her and DH will have subconscious competitions at night sometimes I think…I'm amazed that all my nose hairs haven't been burned out of my nose yet (HAHA)! I also had no idea how quickly they learn to do things. For instance LO has *almost* perfected rolling over from back to front and then from front to back. I didn't realize it would happen so instantly. She started back to front last week and then tonight she randomly went back and forth a few times and enjoyed it (unless she got herself stuck ha!)
  • I'll echo the grown man farts. I have asked my husband a few times "was that you" and sincerely not known the answer.

How satisfying getting a burp out can be. I feel actual pride.

How much his crying impacts me! I totally thought I'd be in the eh, crying doesn't bother me, camp. Nope. Sometimes it physically pains me when he gets a good wail on.

How much I enjoy being told he looks like me and how much he does look like me. I thought he'd look more like daddy!

This exact thing. She finally took 2 oz bottle today but it is a serious fight and this was the most success we've had yet. She loves BF and I'm surprised how much I love it too! But I wish she'd take the bottle better before I go back to work so I can stop worrying!

  • I'm surprised that he has never taken a pacifier. I never heard of a baby not taking one. Mine never has. He hates them.

  • It's surprised me how easy he is to put down to sleep for the night. I think I lucked out in this department.

Also, I remember the first time I was jokingly about to munch on his toes and he little feet had a small stink to them! Totally shocked me.

Oh and I was told that EBF baby poop doesn't smell. That's a bold faced LIE!!!

I'm also surprised at how patient I am with him. I just want him happy all the time and I thought I would lose it more often but I'm so patient with him. I remember getting annoyed at kids I babysat, mind you they were older and bratty but I can't imagine getting super annoyed with him; he's too damn cute! I'm sure it will happen at some point but it hasn't happened yet.
  • The erection thing freaks me out. I tell DH to have a talk with his son and that he needs to put his baby boner away. I also am surprised that his poo is so hard to clean up and gets in every crevasse. I was told that breast milk poo is harder to clean up. This is DS specific, but he doesn't belly laugh. He is a happy baby, but doesn't really laugh at all. He laughs like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. I find it incredibly entertaining.

My DD won't either!!! I really really really wish she would! :))

Edit: that smily is creepy... mine also won't take a bottle... Hope she figures it out before Monday when I got back to work I guess she just likes the boob to much as well
  • How early he would love to play. I knew babies obviously got to a point when they would want to play but I guess I thought it would be more like 6 months.

He also does not take a pacifier. Of he does it's for 5 minutes tops then wants nothing to do with it. He prefers his fist.

I'm actually surprised that DS doesn't laugh at all. He smiled and coos but no giggles yet. He's a very serious fella.

    Also...snoring. It cracks me up.

  • Farts and burps that put my dad to shame!

  • I'm surprised that ds looks nothing like me. I'm Italian and dh is Ukrainian- light hair, blue eyes and pale skin. I thought for sure my traits would win but nope! Ds is his spitting image

  • How I never thought I could be a SAHM and that I would miss work, but how now I wish we could afford it and have that option so I could hang out with her all day long. She's a pretty awesome hang out buddy.
